Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival This weekend we are delighted to be celebrating our fifth year of sponsoring the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival, but even more significant than that, we are celebrating the return of racegoers to the meeting after last year’s event was run behind closed doors. And although the unseasonably dry weather has had some impact on field sizes over the two days, the quality of the racing is once again of the highest standard. We are delighted with the field assembled for the Long Distance Hurdle, and the Ladbrokes Trophy is as deep a field as I can remember for many years. I wouldn’t mind betting that we’ll see more than one of the runners lining up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. The Ladbrokes brand is all about having fun and being a shared experience, and there is no better example of that than here at Newbury Racecourse for two of the finest days Jump racing in the calendar. We’d like to thank all the team at Newbury Racecourse for putting on a great event, and all the trainers, owners and jockeys for providing the stars on show. Good luck everyone and have fun.

Simon Clare

RETRAINING OF RACEHORSES (RoR) PARADE OF FORMER RACEHORSES – 12.50PM A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.50pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including Gold Cup winner Coneygree, Smad Place and leading sprinter, Limato. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR: •

Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities;

•

Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses;

•

Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing; and

•

Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care.

In non-Covid affected times, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

The six horses featured in the parade are: 1. Barbers Shop – ridden by Katie Jerram-Hunnable 19-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth Bred by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Barbers Shop raced in The Queen’s colours with distinction. An eight-time winner, he was also placed in a King George and a Hennessy. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing. 2. Coneygree - ridden by Sara Bradstock 14-year-old by Karinga Bay, formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder - Lord Oaksey Winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup and twice a winner a Newbury, the locally trained Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He has adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won RoR showing classes and qualified for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree. Sara and Coneygree’s ambition for 2022 is to repeat the feat of qualifying for the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead in June.

3. Limato – ridden by Ellie Greenhalgh 9-year-old by Tagula, formerly trained by Henry Candy Breeder – Seamus Phelan A top-class sprinter and winner of 14 of his 33 races, including the Group 1 July Cup, Limato has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable since he retired from racing in autumn 2020. Katie reports that Limato settled in really quickly and is a real character. He loves Princess the cat and his stable mate Ballin My Lady. This year Limato has taken part in RoR showing classes and had some good results at the Southern Show and the Sports Horse Show before ending with a win at the West Wiltshire much to the delight of his owner Paul Jacobs. 4. Un Temps Pour Tout – ridden by Clare Poole 12-year-old gelding by Robin Des Champs, formerly trained by David Pipe Breeder – Felix Talbot A dual Cheltenham Festival winner, Un Temps Pour Tout has been in the care of Clare Poole since 2019. Although sensitive in his nature once trust was established there has been no looking back. Clare says: “Tompy has been an absolute pleasure to retrain, he always gives his all and is thoroughly enjoying his showjumping and our goal is to qualify for the British Showjumping Amateur Championships at Aintree next year”. His owners Caroline Tisdall and Bryan Drew have followed his progress every step of the way. 5. Smad Place – ridden by Sarah Holden 14-year-old gelding by Smadoun, formerly trained by Alan King Breeder – Eric Aubtee & Mme Maryse Aubree Winner of the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup, Smad Place was entrusted to Sarah Holden in 2019, although he is still owned by his wonderfully supportive owner, Mrs Peter Andrews. After a slow start due to Sarah having baby and then Covid, the pair have recently really cemented their partnership and they have been out to some local unaffiliated dressage events and had fun cross-country schooling. The plan is to continue doing dressage over the winter months and then to do more RoR events, including racecourse parades and competitions affiliated to RoR. 6. Zarkandar – ridden side saddle by Olivia Fforde 14-year-old gelding by Azamour, formerly trained by Paul Nicholls Bred by the Aga Khan A Grade 1 winner at Cheltenham, Aintree and Auteuil, Zarkandar amassed almost £1 million in prize money. A half-brother to the Arc winning mare Zarkava, he is known as Gino at home and was retired from racing in 2018 when Paul Nicholls gifted Zarkandar to Lucinda Sims. Since then he has adjusted very well to a slower pace of life, starting as Lucinda’s happy hacker before graduating to dressage and hunter trials. He has recently started showing side-saddle under Olivia, which he really enjoys and is excelling at.

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Please gamble responsibly. JOHN FRANCOME’S FAMOUS FIVE John Francome is universally acknowledged as one of Britain’s greatest jump jockeys. The seven times champion won the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Ladbrokes Trophy, two years running on Brown Chamberlin and Burrough Hill Lad in 1983 and 1984. Francome’s achievements are recognised with the running of the Ladbrokes John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury. Here he lists his five favourite winners of the Ladbrokes Trophy.

1. BURROUGH HILL LAD (1984) He carried 12st and he was a really good horse, like Denman. He went on to win a Cheltenham Gold Cup. He won very easily despite having started off his career being a very ordinary jumper. He won a Welsh National, carrying 10st 9lb, when he must have been the biggest certainty there’s ever been. He was trained by the excellent Jenny Pitman, who knew her horses inside out.

2. DENMAN (2007) Other than being a different colour Denman and Burrough Hill Lad were like two peas from the same pod. Denman was called ‘The Tank’. Burrough Hill Lad would have given him a run for his money in a tug of war any day of the week. In 2007 Denman did the same as Burrough Hill Lad. He was a big, dominating, strong, relentless galloper. It’s what they do on the day and what they do subsequently that impresses.

3. SUNY BAY (1997) The Ladbrokes Trophy is an extraordinary race for throwing up good horses. When Suny Bay won it in 1997 he should have fallen at the fourth fence. How Graham Bradley stayed on board, I don’t know. He looked down, a faller, and suddenly he found a foot from somewhere and still won. It was an amazing performance by the horse and the jockey. He again carried a lot of weight. He went on to finish second in the Grand National under 12st.

4. CHARLIE POTHEEN (1972) He was the earliest winner of this race I can remember. Richard Pitman, who was Fred Winter’s first jockey, rode him. He was trained by Fulke Walwyn, who was the enemy over the wall if you like. This horse jumped really badly left-handed for three and a quarter miles. Instead of letting him stay up against the rail, Richard kept pulling him back to the middle of the fence and then he rode all the way across. They would take up ten yards by running left and jumping left at every single fence. He obviously had a lot of ability. Roman Holiday, ridden by Jeff King, a jockey who still today is the best I’ve seen, was second. He couldn’t get past Charlie Potheen, not round him or up his inside. Jeff went mad when he got back in the weighing room.

5. BOBS WORTH (2012) It was a toss-up between him and Native River but I’ve gone for Bobs Worth because I shouldn’t think there has ever been a better horse to have owned. He was bought for very little off Barry Geraghty. He won the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, the RSA Chase and the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. And in between he won the Hennessy. He was an extraordinary horse, not very big, a complete opposite to Burrough Hill Lad, Dennan, Suny Bay and Charlie Potheen. There wasn’t much of him but he had a big heart. He was a battler.

A C&D maiden chase winner, he was highly tried thereafter and only just failed to reel in Espoir de Teillee over shorter here on handicap debut in March. He’s of interest from the same mark. 2018 winner Kapcorse is clearly fragile but warrants a look on return. The Ladbrokes Committed To Safer Gambling Intermediate Hurdle Race (A Limited Handicap) (Registered as the Gerry Feilden Hurdle) (Listed Race)

GENERAL SIR RANDLE FEILDEN, always known to his friends as Gerry, is remembered as the outstanding racing administrator of the 30 years following the end of the Second World War. Newbury was his local meeting as his home was at Minster Lovell, in the neighbouring county of Oxfordshire. He was senior Steward of the Jockey Club in 1952 and again in 1961, then from 1965 until 1973. An approachable and progressive man, he set himself the task of improving racing for the benefit of all concerned. Among the reforms and innovations introduced during his terms of office as Senior Steward were starting stalls, the camera patrol, systematic dope testing, overnight declaration of blinkers and centralised handicapping. He gave further voluntary service to racing as Chairman of the Stable Lads Welfare Trust for six years, and instigated an examination of the pay and conditions of service of stable staff.

43

RACE 5

General Sir Randle Feilden was chairman of Newbury Racecourse, and a Director of several other public companies, including the Morland Brewery which sponsored the Morland Brewery Handicap for the first time at Newbury’s inaugural July meeting in 1963. General Feilden died in October 1981.

Trevor Hemmings & The Ladbrokes Trophy Trevor Hemmings, who passed away in October aged 86, will be in many people’s thoughts this weekend when Cloth Cap attempts to win the Ladbrokes Trophy for the second time at Newbury. Cloth Cap secured a third victory in the race for Hemmings in 2020, establishing him as the most successful owner in the race’s history. His other wins came with Trabolgan (2005) and the Grand National winner Many Clouds (2014). Figures involved in those successes share their memories of those occasions. Mick FitzGerald (rider of Trabolgan) “I had been off for four and a half months with a broken neck. Trevor was unwaning in his support for me to ride Trabolgan, for which I will be eternally grateful. I had only come back to ride that week. My first winner was at Newbury on the Friday on my second ride back and I was riding Trabolgan on the Saturday. I don’t know how I would have taken not being able to ride in the race. It was very special for Seven Barrows because it was Nicky Henderson’s first win in the race. Trabolgan had top weight, but he travelled so well and never at any stage was I worried. I was trying to time it all the way up the straight not to hit the front too soon. I never had to hit him, he was just too good. For the first time in my life I couldn’t speak afterwards, I was very emotional. Trabolgan is still around today. He is in the Isle Of Man and Trevor sent me a video of him during lockdown.

Trabolgan (2005)

Many Clouds (2014)

Oliver Sherwood (trainer of Many Clouds) “When I was watching the race I remember thinking he should be further forward going to the Cross fence but up the straight I could see he was going to be in the first three and then he came through to win. When he passed the line my ex-assistant picked me up and nearly threw me over his shoulder. Mr Hemmings wasn’t there that day. After racing on that day we would always go to dinner with Tim Syder but on the way there we diverted into the Pheasant for a few drinks. I got a call at about 7.30pm from an unknown number. He said: ‘Is that Oliver Sherwood? It’s Mr Trevor Hemmings here’. So I quickly had to sober up. He called to say the win had given him a lot of thrills and we had a long chat. That was the only time we spoke that weekend.” Tom Scudamore (rider of Cloth Cap) “It was a great day. Cloth Cap jumped from fence to fence. It was a great honour to win one of the great staying chases in Trevor’s colours. His name has been synonymous with many good staying chasers that have become part and parcel of every major long distance chase since the mid-1990s. Trevor would have at least one in those races so to be able to do it last year was a real thrill. He wasn’t there but I spoke to him afterwards so I knew how much pleasure he got out of it. He was a great supporter of National Hunt racing. Trevor leaves a huge hole.”

The History Of The Ladbrokes Trophy

The Ladbrokes Trophy was first run at Cheltenham in 1957 but was moved to Newbury after three years, forging a reputation as one of the most prestigious races in jumps racing. It has earned its place through the achievements of a glittering roll call of former winners, headed by Arkle, who represent many of the best chasers to have graced the sport. Mill House, Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad, One Man, Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River were others to have embellished their careers with victory in the 3m2f handicap chase. It has been sponsored by Ladbrokes since 2017, having previously enjoyed an uninterrupted association with Hennessy that had endured since its inception in 1957 when Mandarin clinched the first of two wins, a feat matched only twice since by Arkle (1964 & 1965) and Denman (2007 & 2009). There have been no three time winners, Arkle narrowly failing when beaten by Stalbridge Colonist, to whom he was conceding 35lb, in 1966, and Denman finishing third in 2010. The late Fulke Walwyn enjoyed multiple successes with an unmatched record of seven wins from Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981). Nicky Henderson (2005 Trabolgan, 2012 Bobs Worth & 2013 Triolo D’Alene) and Paul Nicholls (2003 Strong Flow, 2007 & 2009 Denman) are the most successful current trainers with three wins each. Willie Robinson and Tom Scudamore have ridden the most winners of the race, Robinson on Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), and Scudamore on Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018), Cloth Cap (2020). There have been four horses that have captured the Ladbrokes Trophy and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season - Arkle, Bregawn, Denman and Bobs Worth. Native River won the Ladbrokes Trophy and Welsh National in 2016 and the following season landed the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Many Clouds remains the only horse to have won both the Ladbrokes Trophy and the Grand National at Aintree.

The Watch Racing Free Online At Ladbrokes Handicap Steeple Chase (For The Jim Joel Memorial Trophy) JIM JOEL was a very popular owner breeder who died at the age of 97. One of racing’s greatest benefactors, Mr Joel enjoyed considerable success with more than 1,200 winners both on the flat and over the jumps. They included The Laird and Beacon Light who will be remembered by long standing regulars as prolific Newbury winners. A shy, modest bachelor, Mr Joel, who ran his family’s diamond mining business in South Africa until his death, became an owner soon after his service in the Hussars during the First World War and produced the winners of many big races at his Childwick Bury Stud near St Albans. Maori Venture provided him with his greatest success over the jumps when winning the 1987 Grand National in his famous black and scarlet colours. He is always remembered with respect and admiration.
