Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival This weekend we are delighted to be celebrating our fifth year of sponsoring the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival, but even more significant than that, we are celebrating the return of racegoers to the meeting after last year’s event was run behind closed doors. And although the unseasonably dry weather has had some impact on field sizes over the two days, the quality of the racing is once again of the highest standard. We are delighted with the field assembled for the Long Distance Hurdle, and the Ladbrokes Trophy is as deep a field as I can remember for many years. I wouldn’t mind betting that we’ll see more than one of the runners lining up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. The Ladbrokes brand is all about having fun and that being a shared experience and there is no better example of that than here at Newbury Racecourse for two of the finest days Jump racing in the calendar. We’d like to thank all the team at Newbury Racecourse for putting on a great event, and all the trainers, owners and jockeys for providing the stars on show. Good luck everyone and have fun.

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? THE TWELVE CLUB was formed in 1924 by some racing enthusiasts with its primary objective being “to protect members from the clutches of the Bookmaker”. A competition has been run ever since for each Flat season in which its approximately 200 members – all racing enthusiasts and many employed in racing – choose twelve horses [hence the “Twelve”] prior to the season and notionally invest £1 at SP each time those horses run. The winner each year is the member whose Twelve shows the largest profit, with losers counting. A similar competition has most recently been introduced for the National Hunt season. For many years the Twelve Club has made donations to racing charities and the connection with the British Racing School began in 1988. In 1993 Ian de Wesselow suggested that the Club make an annual award to the School’s two best trainees from the previous year. Each year since, the Club has awarded the Twelve Club whip and a cash prize to the two leading trainees; the first award made by Sir Gordon Brunton was to Royston Ffrench in 1995. The 2020 Twelve Club winners are Hana MacDonald [employer Archie Watson] and Ashton Porter [employer Ben Pauling]. The presentation will take place in the winner’s enclosure following the first race.

The Ladbrokes Daily Odds Boosts Steeple Chase (A Novices’ Limited Handicap) (For the Fulke Walwyn Trophy) FULKE WALWYN was one of the greatest personalities in the history of steeplechasing. He was three times champion amateur jockey, and turned professional after winning the Grand National on Reynoldstown in 1936, but was obliged to give up riding after fracturing his skull at Ludlow in April 1939. Fulke Walwyn began training in 1939 and was Champion trainer for the first of five times in the season of 1946/7. He won the first running of the Hennessy with Mandarin in 1957, the second with Taxidermist 12 months later, and won it again with Mandarin in 1961, Mill House in 1963, Man of the West in 1968, Charlie Potheen in 1972 and Diamond Edge in 1981. He also won the Whitbread Gold Cup seven times, the Grand National with Team Spirit in 1964, the Cheltenham Gold Cup four times and the Champion Hurdle twice. In 1973 Fulke Walwyn became principal trainer for HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, for whom he won the Whitbread Gold Cup with Special Cargo in 1984, Newbury’s Schweppes Gold Trophy with Tammaz in 1975 and many other races. Fulke Walwyn handed over the Saxon House stable to his wife Cath on retiring in May 1990, and died on 18th February 1991. 29

Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle

Thyme Hill

The Grade Two Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle has become a prime early season target for both established and would-be challengers for the Stayers’ Hurdle crown. Thistlecrack was successful at Newbury during the 2015-16 campaign when he went on to dominate the division, winning at both Cheltenham and Aintree, while Unowhatimeanharry took this race the season after winning the Albert Bartlett and more staying Grade 1s followed that year including the Long Walk and the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival. However, the most successful horse in the race’s history was the recordbreaking stayer Big Buck’s whose 18 race winning streak included four Long Distance Hurdle triumphs from 2009 to 2012. He emerged at the end of a golden decade of staying hurdlers when Inglis Drever reeled off a Long Distance Hurdle hat-trick between 2005 and 2007. He was preceded by the French great Baracouda, whose regular appearances in Britain for Francois Doumen included victories at Newbury in 2003 and 2004. 2019 Stayers’ Hurdle winner, Paisley Park ﬁnished runner up in this race last year and is back to try and go one place better but faces stiff opposition including the 2020 Stayers’ Hurdle winner, Lisnagar Oscar, and another past Cheltenham winner, Indefatigable, who took last year’s Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Thomas Darby could also be of interest again if producing a run like his third in last year’s Stayers’ Hurdle.

All tickets, badges and other forms of entry to the Racecourse (including car parks and other surrounding areas owned by the Racecourse) are issued strictly subject to the Racecourse’s terms and conditions of entry. Betting

Laying of bets is subject to Racecourse terms and conditions. The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Grandstand ground ﬂoor, opposite Donna Italia, today. Customers of the boards and rails bookmakers should check their itemised tickets immediately on receipt, as mistakes cannot be rectiﬁed after the ‘off’.

Collecting your winnings: If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the ‘Weighed in’ announcement has been made. There may still be a Steward’s Enquiry and the ﬁrst past the post, or placed horses may be disqualiﬁed. With Bookmakers: A late pay service is available in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
