Good morning and a very warm welcome to a new Jumps season here at Newbury Racecourse with the BetVictor Jumps Season Opener. We are delighted to be joined by racegoers at a Jumps fixture for the first time since 2020 and look forward to celebrating the first day of our 2021/22 National Hunt season. Throughout the day there is plenty to enjoy, starting with the British Horse Society Charity Race at 11.30am. Best of luck to all the riders in today’s race, raising money for such a good cause. We are delighted to be joined by HRH The Princess Royal in her role as Vice-Patron of the British Horse Society and I would like to take this chance to thank them for their sponsorship, along with today’s other sponsors BetVictor, Agetur, Pertemps Network and CSP for their generous support of this card. We would also like to welcome all the serving and retired members of the Armed Forces and Royal British Legion who have joined us this afternoon and ask you to give generously to the Royal British Legion’s Charity collection. Looking ahead to our next meeting, we were excited to recently publish the entries for the Ladbrokes Trophy, including three of the first four home in 2020 and last year’s winner, Cloth Cap. The British Horseracing Authority have granted exemptions from the effects of Rule A38 for this race as it is being run outside the Rules of Racing. Therefore it will not count for any purposes on the horse’s career record. For 4 year olds and upwards who have run at least twice under the recognised Rules of Racing. All horses to be rated: 0-125 for hurdlers/steeplechasers 0-80 for flat horses. Point-topointers can also run subject to individual clearance. Any horses rated above the boundary are to carry overweight to that effect. Distance: One mile, to be started by flag Weight: 11st 7lb* Riders putting up overweight will be subject to a fine of £10 per pound overweight which must be donated to The British Horse Society.

AMY FERRIS Always had horses in the family and loved my time working in racing. I have always wanted to take part in a charity race but never have ben bold enough to apply – until lockdown boredom set in!.

KATE WELCH I’m a 53-year-old ex-Naval Officer and served for 22 years. Now I enjoy teaching and eventing, and training ex racehorses. After helping out a local trainer last year and feeling the phenomenal speed and power of a thoroughbred on the gallops, the seed was sown and I’m so thrilled to have been given the chance to ride in this race.

Weighing out, getting legged up and riding in a 1 mile flat race around the Group/Grade 1 track at Newbury really is my version of living the dream and on 4th November i’ll be doing just that.... How lucky am I.. Back in February The British Horse Society kindly accepted me to ride in their annual race and since then, with the goal set, the all consuming training began.I don’t have a riding background and I hadn’t sat on a horse for 25 years until last summer and, with the help of Epsom racing stalwart Dave Jefferies and his versatile horse ‘ Marcus’, I got going again, cantering up and down pony hill, strengthening up the legs. Since August 2020 i’ve been riding out regularly for local trainer Pat Phelan and also more recently with fellow Epsom trainers Mick Attwater and Simon Dow, stepping up to 3-4 mornings a week. Pat and his staff at Ermyn Lodge Stables have been unbelievably helpful and patient giving me the confidence and skills to be able to spread my wings and ride out at other yards. The journey so far of riding various horses on the numerous grass, fibre sand and poly track gallops at Epsom has been an absolute pleasure and I can’t thank the trainers enough for the opportunities and support. Winning isn’t everything but the will to win certainly is so i will be doing my very best for those who have generously sponsored me. We are raising money for the British Horse Society and the particular campaign my funds will go to is the Second Chance - Rehoming Project

JOSH THOMPSON As I no longer event myself, I really miss the buzz of competing and cannot wait to take on the challenge of the race day at Newbury. I get a huge thrill out of working on the gallops and I am looking forward to taking this to the racecourse. I ran the Cheltenham Half Marathon in 2019 and was looking for another challenge to take on, this ﬁts the bill perfectly.

I’ve always loved horses, ever since I was young, but I was never fortunate enough to have my own. When I moved to London in late 2018 after my last year of university, I had no opportunities to ride at all. That wasn’t a casual factor, the city environment and the bad job were, but I ended up with anxiety and depression. I decided to quit my job nine months in because I was so unhappy and not really myself. I moved out to work as the Social Media Marketing Executive at Goodwood Racecourse just two weeks before Glorious Goodwood 2019. I genuinely say to myself, because this really was the case, that instead of jumping in front of a car, I jumped on a horse. I think that’s mainly why I’d like to raise money for the Changing Lives Through Horses campaign, it sums up my experience. I went from riding rarely, to now three times a week minimum

GRETA SPAREY Since having a serious accident where I was kicked in the face by my horse whilst at a competition in 2017 – I have decided life is precious and you should grab each and every opportunity that comes your way in life! I have ridden since the age of 5 and have enjoyed pony club, hunting team chasing, and eventing but have always had a dream to compete in a proper race. I have ticked the Point to Pointing box when I rode in our local hunt race a few years ago but this race will be the icing on the cake!

EMILIE HARDY Over the last 18 months more than ever I have felt that it is so important to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. I was lucky enough to be given Cloudy when he retired from National hunt racing, and he has given me some on the best days doing things that I could only have dreamed of doing as a child. It would mean so much to me to ride him in this charity race raising money for such a good cause. Changing lives through horses will make such a difference to so many young people. Horses give you a sense of freedom and encourage you to live in the moment, which can improve your mental health. Being around animals and nature bring such positive beneﬁts and the BHS is ensuring that everyone can access and enjoy this regardless of their background.

CHELSEA KHAN As a late entry to the BHS charity race, I will be working extra hard to catch up and be race ready. I have been riding pretty much all my life, but never even sat on a racehorse until now! It is an absolute honour and once in a lifetime experience for me and I am beyond excited to race at Newbury. I lead a very busy life as a fourth-year vet student, as well as working in vet practices. I also have my own little zoo at home including my own horses (including a 2021 foal), mice (which I breed and show), rabbits, degus, a tortoise and a blue tongue skink! I am also extremely competitive, so I have planned lots of PT sessions to help me pass the dreaded ﬁtness test, and have already found a yard to train with!
