Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, featuring the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes and the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup Stakes. Both races have been won by some top-class horses in the past and as is always the case at Newbury, there is a chance you will see an equine star of the future in action this afternoon. My thanks go to Dubai Duty Free for their continued support of Newbury and this two-day meeting. We are sorry they cannot join us in person today but look forward to welcoming all the team back next Spring. I would also like to extend my thanks to today’s other sponsors; Heatherwold Stud, the family of Sir David Sieff and the European Breeders Fund. We are also celebrating National Racehorse Week this weekend across the site, so make sure to visit our set of Starting Stalls in the Paddock Bar area or head to the Eastern Entrance to meet retired racehorse Ouzbeck, in partnership with Greatwood Charity. You will also be able to leave a message of thanks to your favourite racehorse on our dedicated Message Board. To find out more about the off-track action today, head to our What’s On page. Finally, I end on a sadder note as our thoughts are with the family and friends of long-standing supporter of Newbury Racecourse and former Chairman, Christopher Spence, who passed away earlier in the week aged 84. A former Senior Steward for the Jockey Club, he served on the Newbury board for a number of years before becoming Chairman in 2010. He was a great friend to many at Newbury and within the horse racing industry and will be much missed. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, and we hope you have an enjoyable and profitable time.

Julian Thick Chief Executive

Perhaps the chic label might give away the class inside, but it is the palate which sounds the trumpets on your senses. Dubai Duty Free’s Sp Whether it is on the golfing greens, the tennis courts or the racecourse, sponsorship and the support of international events has been an integral part of Dubai Duty Free’s marketing strategy over the years.

Despite the challenges brought on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai Duty Free has continued to invest in sports sponsorship which has helped to favourably position the operation and the city of Dubai. The 2021 sporting ‘season’ began in January with the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, which was won by British player Paul Casey. As a patron sponsor of the tournament, Dubai Duty Free took part in the Pro-AM competition and entertained a limited number of guests in style at the Emirates Golf Club. The 2021 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free, went fantastically well. Held behind closed doors as per the guidelines of the UAE authorities, this year’s tournament carried a prize pot of $3.6 million.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Championships which took place from 7th – 20th March, was won by two-time Grand Slam winner and former World No.1 Garbiñe Muguruza, while Wild Card entrant, Aslan Karatsev, won his very first ATP title.

In addition, much awareness, is also created by the operation’s involvement in horse racing.

Sporting Excellence Dubai Duty Free regularly flies the flag in the UK in April and September at the historical Newbury Racecourse.

The 26th June saw the 14th running of the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby held at The Curragh Racecourse in Ireland, which offered a purse of Euro 1 million. The race meeting marked the return of spectators to sport in Ireland and was won by Godolphin owned Hurricane Lane, trained by Charlie Appleby.

In July, the operation returned to Ireland for the 7th Dubai Duty Free Irish Open held at Mount Juliet Estate and Golf Club. The tournament was won by Australian golfer Lucas Herbert, who claimed his second European Tour tittle.

Meanwhile, the world’s premier international jockey’s challenge, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup took place at Ascot Racecourse in August. Representing Great Britain, Ireland, Rest of the World and The Ladies team in a thrilling six-race showdown, the event was won by the Ladies team for a third time. The distinctive Dubai Duty Free branding is back at the Newbury Racecourse for the two-day flat racing of the Dubai Duty Free International Raceday on September 17th and 18th, which marks the season finale of the operation’s horseracing sponsorship in 2021.

Other sports to benefit from Dubai Duty Free’s support include the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup and the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby 7’s among others.

MILL REEF – THE IMMORTAL CHAMPION

Ian Balding with the great Mill Reef at Park House Stables in Kingsclere.

Flat racing produces new champions every year, but occasionally a horse will emerge whose accomplishments earn them immortal fame. Mill Reef was one such champion and a series of brilliantly courageous efforts across three seasons at the top level have earned him a place in the hearts of the public. This afternoon’s Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes was named in honour of the horse in 1972, shortly after he was retired following a career-ending injury on the gallops. The race has since become a permanent tribute to the little bay colt who raced with a distinctive white noseband and was trained by Ian Balding only seven miles from the racecourse at Park House Stables in Kingsclere. Here at Newbury, Mill Reef won the 1971 Greenham Stakes, a victory which earned him favouritism for the 1971 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. But for racing in the same era as another turf legend, Mill Reef would have won the 2,000 Guineas as well as the Derby but proved no match for Brigadier Gerard, running over his specialist distance of a mile at Newmarket. It proved a temporary hiccup in Mill Reef’s rise to greatness as the colt overcame stamina doubts to take the Derby at Epsom more impressively than the bare margin of two lengths might suggest. Now at his peak he comfortably dismissed the champion older horse Caro with a four-length romp in the Eclipse Stakes and followed that by winning the King George by six lengths at Ascot where jockey Geoff Lewis famously declared, “Daylight was second.” Despite a long campaign he was still impossible to beat at Longchamp where he was threaded through the field by Lewis and swept to a three lengths victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, an achievement that earned him ‘Horse of the Year’ honours over Brigadier Gerard.

Mill Reef (left), ridden by Geoff Lewis, wins the Derby at Epsom in 1971 comfortably by two lengths.

When Mellon agreed to keep him in training at four, anticipation soared for a rematch with Brigadier Gerard, possibly in the 1972 Eclipse, but it never happened. Mill Reef returned at four to win the Prix Ganay and Coronation Cup but became one of the high-profile victims of a virus that swept through many yards. He was on the way back and being prepared for an attempt at a second Arc win when he fractured a cannon bone and two sesamoid bones on the gallops, injuries from which he only survived because of pioneering surgery performed at Kingsclere by vet Professor Jim Roberts. He retired to the National Stud in Newmarket becoming a champion sire as well through his best sons Shirley Heights and Reference Point, who both won the Derby just like their celebrated father.

Ian Balding pictured alongside Breeda McLoughlin, Emma Balding and Dubai Duty Free Vice Chairman, Colm McLoughlin for the Mill Reef Stakes.

Betting Forecast: 9-2 Bague d’Or (IRE), 7-1 Fox Vardy (USA), 15-2 Praiano (GER), 9-1 Whitehaven (FR), 10-1 Without Revenge (GB), 11-1 Tall Order (IRE), 14-1 Imperial Sun (GB), 16-1 Parachute (GB), 18-1 Frontispiece (GB), In The Breeze (IRE), Duke of Verona (IRE), 22-1 Winterwatch (GER), 33-1 Ridgeway (FR) Race Summary: Plenty in with chances but BAGUE D’OR looks a 3-y-o firmly on the up and he’s taken to notch his third victory of the year having seemingly been well suited by the step up in trip when scoring at Newmarket 3 weeks ago. Fox Vardy has presumably had his problems but he’s feared most provided he’s ready to roll after a year off the track, ahead of Whitehaven and Praiano. 1-2-3: 1.BAGUE D’OR (IRE) 2.FOX VARDY (USA) 3.WHITEHAVEN (FR)
