THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today’s ay’s feature is the 3.58pm Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap Stakes, a Class C 4 sprint run over five furlongs. Restrictedd to horses rated between 61-80, today’s £20,000 competiti competition sees 12 runners take the field. AZUINTHEJUNGLE THEJUNGLE will arrive here full of confidence having won four of his last l five races, all of which were over the same me distance as today’s encounter. STARTLING is seeking a hat-trick toda today following recent triumphs at Southwell and Redcar under the guidance of Jason Hart. Set to team up with the sam same jockey today, he is another one to keep a close eye on. MONTEZUMA meanwhile has placed aced in five of his six start starts at Musselburgh and commands respect.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH TCH ANDREW MULLEN is currently leading the championships withh six w wins, and will be looking to add to his tally today. He has five chances today, with rides on Sunriseontheboyne ntheboyne (2.13), Jkr Jk Cobbler (2.48), Wen Moon (3.58), Stay On Tab (4.33) and Tide Lines (5.08). A joint-winner nt-winner of the championships championshi in 2025, PAUL MULRENNAN has claimed five victories here this his year. He will feature in the 2.13 on Humble SSpark, the 2.48 on Kelpie Grey, the 3.23 on Brandenburg, the 3.58 on Montezuma and the 5.08 on Aighea Aighear.

TRAINERS TO WATCH JIM GOLDIE is the runaway leader in the championship standings with 14 wins and is always one to keep an eye on at this racecourse. He will be represented by Humble Spark in the 2.13, Kelpie Grey in the 2.48, Montezuma and Thunderstorm Katie in the 3.58, Savoy Blue in the 4.33 and Togeather Forever and Aighear in the 5.08. Having recently claimed the spoils in the Ayr Gold Cup with Pellitory, DAVID O’MEARA will be looking for further Scottish success today. He is represented by Walsingham and Kaleido in the 2.13 and Calef in the 4.33.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.38 THE BRITISH EBF NOVICE STAKES This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

2.13 THE WEATHERBYS RACING BANK SELLING STAKES Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this one mile and 208 yards contest for three-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

2.48 THE INVADES DAY PARTY HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs and 15 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

3.23 THE DROPKICKS SPLIT THE G NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular seven furlongs and 15 yards race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

3.58 THE WEATHERBYS STALLION BOOK HANDICAP STAKES This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

4.33 THE GLOBAL HOME OF OUTDOOR ADVERTISING NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES This five furlongs race for two-year-olds is another nursery handicap stakes. The horses participating are rated between 0-65. As is the case with the race set to take place at 3.23, those taking part here must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far.

5.08 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile, five furlongs and 216 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

Azuinthejungle claims victory at Ayr in July.

Race preview from Weatherbys It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card at Musselburgh this afternoon and a competitive field of seven take to the start for the Weatherbys Racing Bank Selling Stakes. The highest rated in the field is Phillip Makin’s Priapos, a Zoustar gelding who scored twice at Carlisle earlier in the season. He must shoulder an 8lb penalty for those successes but should appreciate stepping back up in trip. Walsingham posted a good third at Pontefract last time and his fifth in the Golden Mile at Goodwood from a mark of 87 rates amongst the strongest form in this contest. David O’Meara’s six-year-old has scored four times in the past 18 months and must hold strong claims of getting back in the winners’ enclosure here with conditions to suit. Stablemate Kaleido caught the eye when third at Southwell last time and gives the yard a strong hand. Kingman gelding Nostrum is a former Group 3 winner – when trained by Sir Michael Stoute – and, now trained by Michael Appleby, will benefit from this step up in distance after a fifth over six furlongs at Newmarket last time. Sunriseontheboyne chases the hattrick for Ben Haslam after scoring over course and distance last time, whilst The Stone Power won on his penultimate start at Ffos Las. A closely matched field of 12 compete in the Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap and four-year-old filly Startling must WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW

hold strong claims for John Wainwright. She has won her last two in impressive style and bids for the hattrick from a 6lb higher mark under Jason Hart.

Startling must hold strong claims for John Wainwright. Azuinthejungle is the other last-timeout winner in the field and Nigel Tinkler’s prolific four-year-old has won four of his last five starts. Alex Jary gets back in the saddle to take off a handy 3lbs and the gelding arrives in the form of his life. Whilst still consistent, course-anddistance winner Jer Batt bids to snap a long losing streak from a sliding mark as does Listed winner Anaisa, who drops down in distance following an encouraging fourth at Redcar. Montezuma won here back in April and has finished in the top two on four of his five other starts at Musselburgh, whilst Thunderstorm Katie and six-year-old Wen Moon are the others who can count a course-and-distance success on their record. Gemma Tutty’s three-year-old filly Call Margot looks well-handicapped from a mark of 74 based on her earlier season form, a fast-finishing second place in the 3YO Dash at Epsom reading as strong form – the reopposing Shes Got A Brother back in third that day.
