This is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 53 to 72 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

This one mile contest for those aged three-years-old and upwards is another maiden stakes - a race for horses which have not run more than three times. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a seven furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 49 to 68

Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

THE VIRGIN BET EVERY SATURDAY MONEY BACK HANDICAP

While some of these have already shown a fair level of ability, newcomer CLOUDS HILL is pretty appealing on paper and, truth be told, he wouldn’t need to be out of the ordinary to make a winning start to his career If the Cracksman colt is strong in the betting the hint should be taken. Motawaared stepped up on his debut effort when chasing home a promising type at Southwell and he is feared most ahead of French import Zowal and Raulin.

SPARTAN ARROW was a good third in a pretty valuable York handicap on his sole start last year and, having finished down the field in the Newcastle contest won by Paddy’s Day on return/debut for new yard in February, he showed the benefit of that spin when striking at Wolverhampton three weeks ago The low-mileage 5-y-o is taken to follow up here and, in the process, bring the winning spree of Paddy’s Day to a halt. At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
