THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE
Today’s ay’s feature is the Portobello Cup at 3.45pm, a Class 4 handicap run over o 2m 2f restricted to horses rated betweenn 61-80. 11 runners take the field today for a purse of £20,000. Preference P goes to FLORIDA DREAMS on hiss handicap debut. Successful on hurdles and NH Flat, the 8yo steps up u in trip on a lenient mark - and with Kevin Stott travelling up for the ride, today could be his day. Also notewo noteworthy is the Ian Williams-trained Vaguely Royal, winner of five races from 1m4f to 2m across various ground aand fresh off a win at York last month. However, the 6yo runs today with a 4lb rise off ff his last mark, which m may just give his older rival the edge.
JOCKEYS TO WATCH TCH OISIN ORR enters today with a 27% strike rate, with 177 wins ffrom a book of 63 rides. He has three chances to extend that today, riding Sweet Iris inn the first at 2.15pm, 2.15p Newport in the feature race at 3.45pm, and Edmond Halley at 4.15pm. m. DANIEL TUDHOPE is on 21.4% 2 and can add to this with two rides today, the Davidd O’Meara trained Gordons Girl in the first, aand Charlie Johnston’s Vitality at 3.15pm. Worth looking out for SHANE GRAY in the last at 4.45pm 4.45pm, riding Pouting off a 21.9% strike rate.
TRAINERS TO WATCH JIM GOLDIE, runaway leading trainer, repeats yesterday’s 7 runner feat with another book of 7 entrants. He’ll be hoping that Savoy Blue comes home in the second at 2.45pm, before saddling 4 in the feature race at 3.45pm: Trojan Sun, Gallus Norman, Furhaan, and Cascade Hall, and Joshuas Dream in the penultimate at 4.15pm. Hot on his heels is TIM EASTERBY, saddling 5 today, spread over a greater diversity of races than his rival - Inns And Out (2.15pm), Spectacular Diver (2.45pm), Only Dream Big (3.15pm), Vince Le Prince (4.15pm) and Albegone (4.45pm).
RACE DESCRIPTIONS 2.15 THE EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES This race is a seven furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
2.45 THE NATIONAL RACEHORSE WEEK NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlong race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.
3.15 THE THOMSON BETHUNE HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
3.45 THE PORTOBELLO CUP HANDICAP STAKES This is a two miles and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
4.15 THE AAB GROUP AND BIBBY FINANCIAL SERVICES HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. .
4.45 THE MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING COMPANY HANDICAP STAKES Our finale is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Trucial Pearl remains nicely handicapped on the form of her Ripon win and is feared most ahead of Vitality, who has often proved a bit too headstrong for her own good since a good run at Epsom in the spring but Danny Tudhope could be the man to settle her.
