THE TRICKSTER ended esullast term in fine fettle after a pair of wins at Beverley and Redcar. He is yet to get on the board this season rm fett r i though despite some impressive placed efforts, most recently when third in a strong Epsom handicap last ough month Karl Burke’s Dubawi colt CASTLE STUART was a solid third here on his return back in April and UALISM was unlucky in defeat at Beverley last time out, just a should come on for that run while INDIVIDUALISM was d head behind the leader in second

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

2.30 THE ALAN STEEL FOR INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RETIREMENT PLANNING HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

4.30 THE ALAN STEEL FOR

PENSIONS HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

5.00 THE ALAN STEEL

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
