TODAY’S RACING

THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA

It’s a stacked day of racing here today with plenty of top races. The Sky Bet For The Fans Handicap Stakes s racin at 5.15 could be the pick of the bunch however Nine are declared to run and Anthony McCann’s Rising 5 Sky looks to have a great chance of taking the win. The filly was an impressive winner on the all weather s at Dundalk last month. Another last time out winner is Fast Fred who won over this course and distance nd ed wh two weeks ago for trainer Phillip Makin. Night Breeze was a solid third in a strong handicap at Lingfield wo we t last time out and could also be a contender.

Burke saddles just the one runner today, the debuting Tamam Star in the 4.15. The two-year-old Kodi Bear colt is certainly one to watch. JOHN BUTLER is another in top form at the moment with a 32.1% strike rate over the last month Butler has two runners today, Madame de Sevigny in the 3.45 and Senor Cortez in the 6.15

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

This race is a five furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for fillies and mares aged three-years-old and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile, four furlongs and about 104 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a seven furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

6.15 THE SKY BET BUILD A BET HANDICAP

Our penultimate race is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

6.45 THE SKY BET EXTRA PLACES HANDICAP STAKES

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80

Plenty are in with a shout. MONTEZUMA took a step forward when opening his account over C&D 2 weeks ago and can defy a 7lb rise in the weights at the chief expense of Reigning Profit who didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when eighth at Pontefract last time and has been given a chance by the handicapper. Recent Beverley scorer I’m Next, Knicks and Albegone all enter calculations too in this wide-open sprint.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to make a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
