TODAY’S RACING
THE TRACK
A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA
Today’s feature race is the Dropkicks Hony Tonk Handicap at 4.33pm There are ten runners set to contest T this year’s race, with the top-weight I’M NEXT having every chance for Tim Easterby and Duran Fentiman. ever
The three-year-old has been in fine form this season, with a win and three placed efforts from six starts e-year-old
He now carried 1lb more than when finishing second at Chester last time out but cannot be discounted. ow t MONTETEZUMA tly of late, putting in another good effort at Windsor when has been running consistently an third, expect another bold bid here SMOOTH SILESIE couldn’t make it three wins on the spin at Lingfield last time out but could well return to form
JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

The first of which is Parisian Schol e of putting his experience to good use to get off the second race but the juvenile has every chance experi oard Saxonia, who is right near the front of the weights He’s been mark His final ride of the day is ab righ of late, with a win and two second from his last three starts. Rates as the one to beat in excellent form late CAM HARDIE has just the three rides, including one in our feature aboard Sugar Baby, the three-year-old takes on some older rivals but is sure to give a good account s
TRAINERS TO WATCH
RUTH CARR sends two runners north of the border for today’s racing. Sea Master is partnered by the ever capable Joanna Mason and will be hoping to return to the winners’ enclosure after a good fourth at Ripon He remains on a career high but has shown the ability to win a race of this nature BRYAN SMART also sends two runners from his base in North Yorkshire. High Opinion gets the benefit of 3lb claimer in our feature contest Operation Gimcrack will be looking to send the trainer home happy in our finale, although carrying top weight in what looks a competitive race will be no easy task

HANDICAP STAKES
Our opener is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the threeyear-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 60.
3.25 THE MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE PREMIUM ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP STAKES
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 56 to 75 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

5.43 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING HANDICAP STAKES
To round out today’s action is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 58 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH
At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
