TODAY’S RACING

THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

Today boast seven action-packed races, with our feature race, the £50,000 Sky Bet For the Fans Handicap, day £50,0 finishing up the card at 6.45pm Eight runners contest this one mile & four furlongs race rated from 78 to 102. Although the eldest horse in this race, the experienced GWEEDORE is the one to watch; although hough unimpressive at Southwell in February, a return to his favoured grass surface offers great potential to a bounce back and he has been given a good chance by the handicapper. Bottom-weight Oriental Prince a has only run on the all-weather thus far but may be the dark horse in this race should he also find the s turf to his liking

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

PAUL MULRENNAN king to extend his 23.3% strike rate here. He is in great recent form and will be looking nshine (4.45), Letsbefrank (5.15), and Rock Melody takes up the ride on Code Purple (3.45), Eternal Sunshine Lets 20.8%) also one to watch with four rides today as well: Swift (6.15) CONNOR BEASLEY is 10 from 48 (20.8%) w al (4.15), Zarzyni (4.45), Spartan Warrior (5.15). OWEN STAMMERS has one Salian (3.45), Star Material (5 ride here today, Chesneys Charm (5.45) and is coming off a 21.4% strike rate. s

TRAINERS TO WATCH

Jim Goldie is a familar name in the Trainer to Watch box and for good reason: he boasts a 52.6% strike rate and will be looking to add to this with a stablesworth of runners today: Shine On Brendan & Spun To Gold (both 3.45), Classy Al, Eternal Sunshine & Water of Leith (all 4.45), Cascade Hall, Letsbefrank, Spanish Hustle & Tafsir (all 5.15), Native Honey (5.45), Abduction & Rock Melody (both 6.15). Former opera singer turned trainer Heather Main now specialises in saddling long-priced winners, and with a 44.4% strike rate her runners English Spirit (3.45) and Mister Bluebird (6.15) are worth keeping an eye out for.

THE SKY BET PROUD TO SUPPORT ROR HANDICAP

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 69 to 88. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

This is a seven furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

6.45 THE SKY BET FOR THE FANS HANDICAP

This one mile and four furlongs handicap race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 0 and 105. The conditions of this race stipulate that the maximum weight to be carried by a horse rated 100 would be 9st 4lb, so should a horse rated 105 be entered to run, they would be asked to carry 5lb more than the top weight – 9st 9lb.

Hat-trick seeking MARHABA GHAIYYATH has been winning with something to spare and looks open to improvement on handicap/turf debut. He appeals most ahead of last-time out winner Magellan Cloud who shaped as though he will appreciate this longer trip on handicap debut, while Native Honey has to be respected on stable debut with his yard in flying form.

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
