T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

Today’s highlight is the 3.50 Edinburgh Cup. Zarathos has been consistent recently, having been placed in day’s highlight consiste five of his seven starts and beaten by just a head on his last outing However, he is likely to be outclassed f Ho here and the nod goes to the improving REGALIAN, a winner over 7f on the all-weather This son of Kingman was third on his last start at Newbury (1m, good to firm) a month ago, and having had the an experience over a mile is likely to find more with blinkers equipped for the first time Other contenders perience include We Dare To Dream and Thunder Wonder, meeting again in a rematch of their last start here in April. r aul Mulrennan is once bitten, twice shy and may well be wiser Thunder Wonder was victorious then but Paul bi with We Dare To Dream’s charge this time.

4.25 THE EDINBURGH GIN SEASIDE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 62. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this five furlongs contest for two-year-olds, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

This seven furlongs contest for three-year-old and upwards fillies and mares is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race Initially, the weights are set at 8st 9lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. .

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a mi nimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

4.55 THE EDINBURGH GIN CANNONBALL HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 55 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50

TIMEFORM VIEW Kodiac filly who showed plenty of ability when second of 6 in maiden at Ripon (5f) on debut last month. Quick turnaround/much stronger company both plausible excuses when eighth in 9-runner listed race at York next time and she very much appeals as the type to bounce back in this company.

PLAY SMARTER

The Dante is often the key middle-distance Derby trial and the unbeaten PRIDE OF ARRAS, who was well on top at York, can become the sixth runner this century to complete the double. He has a very similar profile to the last horse to do it, Desert Crown, who was also making just his third start here, and seems sure to stay this longer trip, while 2 of his 3 siblings are Epsom winners. 2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court is the one to beat if he stays, with Delacroix the pick of Aidan O’Brien’s trio.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
