THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE
Today’s day’s feature is the Ina And Ella MacGregor Handicap which is set to ttake place at 3.45pm. Ten go to post for or the 0-80 handicap and the in-form Blakefell has been well-su well-supported on his last couple of recent placed efforts fforts and again will prove popular. The course and distance w winner was unlucky to not get his headd in-front at Kempton, while The Resdev Scholar returns here aft after being successful on his run at the track rack over course and distance last October. The unexposed Two Co Commanders has been knocking on the door over six furlongs and he could relish going back up in trip. Viper ddidn’t quite stay the mile at Newcastle on his last start but had been running well beforehand, eforehand, and is another anoth to consider in a competitive race.
JOCKEYS TO WATCH TCH Leading course jockey PAUL MULRENNAN has a usuall stron strong book of rides across the afternoon. Despite not having a ride in the first, he has five other er opportunities to strike, beginning with Bluestone Lady and ending with Joshuas Dream. OISIN N ORR has beenn a jockey tto follow recently and has rode 11 winners from his lastt 31 rides. Oisin has three rides across the car card, including Two Commanders in today’s feature race. DANNY TUDHOPE had been kept busy at York dduring the Ebor festival last week but it’s interesting that he heads here ere just to ride Calef in today today’s opener.
TRAINERS TO WATCH Runaway leading trainer JIM GOLDIE will bid to extend his lead with no fewer than four runners across this afternoon’s card. Motawaared will hope to get him off to a flyer in the 3.15pm, while he is double handed in our final race as he saddles Approaching Dawn and Joshuas Dream. EDWARD BETHELL arrives here in strong form and is currently opperating at a 25% strike rate over the last fortnight. He saddles just one on the card in today’s feature, which could speak well for Two Commanders. 6
RACE DESCRIPTIONS 2.15 THE IRISH EBF MAIDEN STAKES This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
2.45 THE NATIONAL RACEHORSE WEEK NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.
3.15 THE ‘CELEBRATING VETERAN ARMED FORCES’ SELLING HANDICAP STAKES Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this one mile and one furlong contest for four-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder. Make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.
3.45 THE INA AND ELLA MACGREGOR HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
4.15 THE OCEAN SCOTLAND OUTDOOR ADVERTISING HANDICAP STAKES This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
4.45 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES Our finale is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.
