Today’s day’s main event comes at 2.08 where eight line up to contest the Virg Virgin Bet A Good Bet Handicap Chase. Brian Hughes, Ryan Mania and Danny McMenamin will be aiming to boos boost their fine individual form statistics. Hughes iss operating at a 25& strike rate for the past two weeks, Mania at 29% 2 and McMenamin at 28%. Course and distance stance winner Magna Sam is set for his first run of the season. Hu Hughes is on board Special Rate, Mania rides es Forged Well and McMenamin is teaming up with Swallows Song. Th The veteran 11-year-old will be hoping to add a third victory since moving to Alastair Ralph’s yard back in 2023. 2

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H

As mentioned, BRIAN HUGHES, RYAN MANIA and DANNY MCMENAMIN MIN have all been in excellent form of late. Hughes has three rides and they come in the form of Who’s Glen in the he opener, Special Rate and Return To Florida in the final race of the day. Mania is booked to ride Okavango Delta elta at 1.08 and Forged We Well. McMenamin has a full card starting with Abbey Scope in the opener followedd by Benefit Ben, Gemini Man, Swallows Song, S Cher Tara and finally Hawthorn Road. oad. CRAIG NICHOL has also enjoyed some recent success and he’s got four rides booked including Gonnino in the 1.38

TRAINERS TO WATCH

NICKY RICHARDS wil be aiming to boost his 25% strike rate and he sends just the one runner and that is Abbey Scope in the opening race of the day. At the time of writing, Adam Nicol saw success for three of his last five runners. He has Benefit Ben in the 1.08 and National Questionin the 1.38. DONALD MCCAIN is currently top course trainer and he’s got three runners today. They come in the form of Who’s Glen, Kadjar des Mottes and John Betjeman.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:38 THE LIVESCORE MAIDEN HURDLE RACE The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and four furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

1.08 THE VIRGIN BET HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1:38 THE LIVESCORE BET HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

2.08 THE VIRGIN BET A GOOD BET HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles and seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.38 THE VIRGIN BET HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This three mile handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 105. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

3.08 THE VIRGIN BET SUPPORTS SAFE GAMBLING OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five-year-olds only and will be run over two miles.

This promises to be a strongly-run race and, provided that her jumping passes the test, MOUNTAIN MOLLY may well make a winning start in this sphere. Progressive over hurdles, she cost plenty after winning her sole start between the flags and appeals as the type to make up into a decent chaser. She’s narrowly preferred to Leader Wing who went close over C&D last time and should be in the mix again sporting a change of headgear, while course bumper winner Reflection of You is on a workable mark if back to her best on return to hurdles.
