THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE
Seven ven go to post for todays’ feature race at 3.47pm in the British Stallion SStud EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes. Brazilian an Rose is the sole five year old in the race and current sits at the top oof the weights. She has been highly tried alll season and a has been tried as a sprinter on her last 2 efforts. A return r to today’s trip should see her backk to her best, and the same applies to Ice Sovereigns. Dual Wolverham Wolverhampton winner this term Carnival Of Light returns eturns to calmer waters and she’s interesting after looking progressive. O Of the three-year-old fillies, Homestrait stands out after already scoring over course and distance in August an and always runs her race here. Karl Burke saddles two in the feature in Aspiral and Samraa Green who both could be b below their mark in a competitive race.
JOCKEYS TO WATCH TCH There’s a four way tie at the top of the jockey’s championship with th six si winners a piece. SAM JAMES has six rides across the afternoon as he kicks off the day on Vegasmile mile and ends with SSimple Star. PAUL MULRENNAN is another tied at the top and is well representedd here again with five booked rrides. He rides the bottom weighted Dandy Magic in today’s feature ture and it’s likely he could pick up a winner oor two. SHANE GRAY is the in-from jockey to follow, with 10 winners from his previous 40 rides. Shane has ffour booked rides so look out for his rides which are as follows - Lucius Aurelius, relius, Ice Sovereigns, Ramon D Di Loria and Mr Withington.
TRAINERS TO WATCH JIM GOLDIE is the runaway leader in the championship standings with 14 wins and is always one to keep an eye on. He will be represented by Motawaared in the 1.47, Fear And Fast in the 3.17, Dandy Magic in the 3.47, Kelpie Grey in the 4.17 and Alpine Sierra and Storm On Jura in the 4.50. MICK APPLEBY has been operating at a 19% strike rate over the past month so it may be worth keeping his runners on side. KARL BURKE is another hot trainer, with two runners in today’s feature.
RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.47 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
2.17 THE BRITISH EBF NOVICE STAKES’ This seven furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
2.47 THE KICK START YOUR CAREER WITH THE SRA SELLING STAKES Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this seven furlongs contest for two-year-olds only, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.
3.17 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.
3.47 THE BRITISH STALLION STUD EBF FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
4.17 THE MUSSELBURGH MEMBERS HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
4.50 THE RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

ADONIUS ADONIUS
A huge congratulations to trainer Rebecca Menzies on her first American winner with Adonius. The two year old gelding won on debut here at Musselburgh on Easter Saturday, before following up not two weeks later at our track with another win, on the Sky Bet Sunday Series. He then went on to claim his third win from three starts at Chester, before two hotly contested second place finishes at Goodwood and York. Four wins and two places from just six starts and nearly £200,000 in prize money. We wish all Adonius’ connections the very best of luck as they head to the Breeder’s Cup, on Friday 30th October.
