TODAY’S RACING

THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

Today’s highlight is the Champagne Pommery Brut Royal Gold Cup Handicap Stakes. Top-weight day’s CRIMSON SPIRIT gets the assistance of Hollie Doyle, with the four-year-old looking to bounce back SON from his disappointing effort at Goodwood Previously he’d won three of his last four starts, so cannot di ppointing Prev thr be dismissed if returning to form. Paul Mulrennan takes over from Lauren Young aboard missed turning YAASER, the Jim Goldie trained runner finished a close fourth at York last time out and looks ready to strike from a Gold workable mark He’s already won over course and distance this season and warrants plenty of respect. for the first time on turf since he finished second here 12 GRESSINGTON steps up to seven furlongs t , this has no doubt been the plan and he is a live player months ago. Returning off the same mark t

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

Current leading jockey SAM JAMES has five rides on today’s c the five-year-old has every chance of going one for Katie Scott. It looks a competitive opening race but fi r o the day is aboard Simple Star, who gives weight away better than his recent second His final ride of d m up a win at Perth when well beaten at this track last time out but to all his rivals He failed to follow n a ll ance could well play to his strengths JOE FANNING heads north for just the two rides, the drop in distance pla OE h including aboard Individualism in our feature. PAUL MULRENNAN A completes the front three in the jockey leaderboard, with six rides of his own es own.

TRAINERS TO WATCH

y’s card. Thee first of which is Concert Boy

JIM GOLDIE narrowly leads the way by one in the standings and brings a strong team here today. He is double handed in three of our contests, including two in our feature and looks to have every chance of moving further clear of the chasing pack KEVIN RYAN sends just the one runner, which may well be a tip in itself Tanaka is the sole representative for the yard in our sprint for juveniles, she’ll be looking to improve on a fifth placed effort last time out at Beverley, where she was well supported in the betting beforehand

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

1.50 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY BLANC DE BLANCS HANDICAP STAKES

TIGER LILY BOUTIQUE SELLING STAKES

3.55 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY CUVEE LOUISE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile 208 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this seven furlongs contest for two-year-olds, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY BRUT ROYAL GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

4.30 THE MOVE FORWARD WITH MCEWAN FRASER LEGAL HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

5.05 THE EVOLUTION BPS MCCABE AND LITTLE MEMORIAL AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlongs apprentice handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like all handicaps on today’s card, this means that should a horse rated 60 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
