NEXT MEETING:
MONDAY 24TH AUGUST 2026 CELEBRATING NATIONAL RACEHORSE WEEK RACEDAY Join us at Musselburgh Racecourse for a special Celebrating National Racehorse Week Raceday, held in partnership with Great British Racing, a raceday dedicated to showcasing the skill, athleticism, and journey of Thoroughbreds past and present. The raceday brings racing fans closer to the heart of the sport and alongside the racing, the day will feature an exciting Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) parade, shining a spotlight on the second careers of former racehorses and the incredible versatility they show beyond the track. In the spirit of National Racehorse Week, the raceday also places strong emphasis on education and engagement. We are delighted to welcome a local school to the course, giving students a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes, meet racehorses up close, and see first-hand the love, care and attention that goes into looking after them, and learn how they are cared for, trained, and prepared for both racing and life after sport. This is also supported by Racing to School. If your school would be interested in visiting Musselburgh Racecourse, please email: enquiries@musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk

THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE
Today’s day’s feature is the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes which iis set to take place at 2.20pm. BARNABY ABY RUDGE has taken victory in both of his starts for Jam James Fanshawe and looks the one to beat.. The son of Inns Of Court holds an entry to the Gimcrack SStakes and could well take that up. Robert rt Cowell’s MINSTER MAN was runner-up to a potentially sm smart performer of George Boughey’s on his debut at Yarmouth. He will have learnt a lot from that rrace and can improve further today. FAITH IN FLORENCE is a half-sister to Group One winning sprinter Ox Oxted and was unlucky not to have won at Newbury last time out. The drop down too five furlongs today cou could well play into her favour.
JOCKEYS TO WATCH TCH Top course jockey LAUREN YOUNG has three strong chances nces today, t all for Jim Goldie, in her bid to extend her lead at the top of the table. She rides Approaching roaching Dawn in oour opening race. She then takes the ride on Ashen in the fourth race and finishes nishes the day off with Wooh Woohoo in the following race - hoping to give punters somethingg to cheer about about on Ladies Day. DANIE DANIEL TUDHOPE has a 33% strike-rate here and he takes two rides for David O’Meara. His first mount is M Misunderstood in the fourth race and then he follows that up straight away, way, with a ride on Tiva in the fifth fi race.
TRAINERS TO WATCH JIM GOLDIE is miles clear at the top of the table and as usual, he is mob-handed again today with six runners across the card. He has three ridden by Lauren Young, the duo making a formidable partnership. He also fields Native Honey in the fourth race and Montezuma in the fifth. He rounds out the day with Alnayef in the sxith race - with those three runners being ridden by Paul Mulrennan. PHILLIP MAKIN is operating on a 27% strike-rate here and he sends just the one runner today, Bluestone Lady in our third race. 8
RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.50 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY BRUT ROSE HANDICAP STAKES Our opener is a one mile 208 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
2.20 THE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF NOVICE STAKES This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
2.50 THE COPPER BLOSSOM LADIES DAY NURSERY SELLING HANDICAP STAKES Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this seven furlongs contest for two-year-olds, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing. Like many other races on today’s card, this is also a handicap for horses rated between 0-75.
3.20 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY CUVEE LOUISE GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
3.50 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY BRUT ROYAL HANDICAP STAKES The next race is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
4.24 THE BRODIE HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat, this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
4.54 THE MUIRHALL ENERGY BREATH OF FRESH ENERGY HANDICAP STAKES To round off Ladies’ Day, we have a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like all handicaps on today’s card, this means that should a horse rated 60 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

An interesting small-field novice. MINSTER MAN producing a promising first effort behind a heavilybacked one at Yarmouth just over a fortnight ago and is taken to make the most of the 8lb he receives from Barnaby Rudge, who still showed signs of inexperience when beating one now rated 96 by Timeform at Newcastle last time. Faith In Florence also seems sure to be winning races before long.
