TODAY’S RACING

THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

Today’s highlight is the 2.10 Kirkton Controls Ltd Handicap CURIOUS ROVER finished second here in day’s CURIOU a tougher race last time out five months ago - he’s dropping in class and looks to be the one to beat, her benefitting from a low draw at a distance that he favours. Protest Rally is also one to watch; the who has ng Ral previously shown well here at Musselburgh and looks to favour the track, with two wins and two seconds ously tr from four starts here, though he may find himself a touch outclassed in this race. The dark horse could rom outclasse be Ben Haslam’s Wen Moon, who has previously done himself some credit in classier races than this and nboard, though his last win was back in 2023 returns from a break with Paul Mulrennan onboard, w

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

SAM JAMES and has the leg up on favourite Curious Rover has a 25% strike rate this season after four rides, eira Vision (4.30), and Luna A Inbhir Nis (5.05) in the in the feature race (2.10), as well as Meelaf (1.35), Jumeira hopes of extending this good run. P rennan aul Mulrennan enjoys lots of success at Northern courses and will be m’s Wen Moon (2.10), Purple Martini (3.20) and Yorkshire Glory (4.30) as well as

partnering with Ben Haslam’s an Jim Goldie’s Trojan Sun (2.45) and Rock Melody (3.55), both trainers who have great previous form here w

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

2.10 THE KIRKTON CONTROLS LTD HANDICAP STAKES

2.45 THE WEATHERBYSSHOP.CO.UK HANDICAP STAKES

3.20 THE TRAVIS PERKINS EDINBURGH HANDICAP STAKES

3.55 THE IAN DEWAR MEMORIAL HANDICAP STAKES

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60

This is a one seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55

Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a mi nimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

4.30 THE TRAVIS PERKINS SCOTLAND HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 50 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

5.05 THE WEATHERBYS GLOBAL STALLION APP HANDICAP STAKES

This five furlongs handicap race has been designed for three-year-olds which are rated between 49 and 68 As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card atMusselburghthisafternoon, including theweatherbysshop.co.ukHandicap,a Class6conteststagedover1m6f.

Jennie Candlish’s Pigeon House has proved a useful hurdler, winning twice over timber and rated 123 over obstacles. Whilst the five-year-old still searches for his victory on the level, he does look potentially well-treated from a mark of 65 here. The Saxon Warrior gelding didn’t appear to stay the 2m2f tripatPontefractlasttime, butdidfinish a good second here at Musselburgh overtwomilesonhispenultimatestart, form that has been franked with the winnerscoringagainsince.

The reopposing Trojan Sun was a well beaten last of five in that race but was far too keen in a slowly run affair and haslookedinneedoftherunonhistwo return starts this season. Jim Goldie’s five-year-old scored here at the track over further last August from a mark of 55 and arrives here on just a 1lb higher mark. The Sun Central gelding should come forward now with race fitness on side.

Liam Bailey’s Yakhaber can be slowly away at the start but has posted two solid efforts since stepping back up in tripthelasttwice:finishingaone-length second at Southwell before a fourth at Chelmsford last time. Race preview from Weatherbys

We are also delighted to be sponsoring the closing race on the card, the Weatherbys Global Stallion App Handicap, a Class 5 contest for three-year-olds staged overfivefurlongs.

Nigel Tinkler has only had two runners in this race since 2018, and has won the contest on both occasions,mostrecentlyin2021.The Yorkshire trainer is represented by Azuinthejungle, who shaped well onreturnatNewcastlelasttime, not getting a clear run and left behind by an improving stablemate. The Rumble Inthejungle gelding can race freely, and this drop back to five-furlongspromisestosuit.

Tim Easterby is another winning trainerinthisracewhoisrepresented, landing the spoils in 2015 and 2022. HisArdad geldingBernRossettihas shown little in three maidens but was hampered last time and is a much more interesting proposition now handicapping. He makes his handicap debut under David Allan from an opening mark of 60, but his future may lie over further with plentyofstaminaonthedamsideof hispedigree.

Katie Scott’s Luna A Inbhir Nis perhaps sets the standard on form, a winner of a Newcastle novice on reappearance and last time

overcoming huge odds to score incredibly impressively in handicap company at Ayr. Always prominent, the Rajasinghe filly quickened clear in good style in the final furlong to cruise to a four-and-a-half length victory. She is turned out just four days later under a penalty before the handicapper has a chance to react.

Michael and David Easterby’s What What What is the other last-timeoutwinnertolineupinthisfield,the Eqtidaar gelding making all on the railinafirst-timevisoratNewcastle last time. He appreciated the drop back to the minimum trip that day and can go on improving despite the7lbrise.

The drop back to five furlongs promises to suit Azuinthejungle.

Alan Brown’s Until Dawn must shoulder top weight here from a mark of 68, unchanged after a slightly disappointing return to turf at Catterick last time. However, the Invincible Army filly had previously scored twice on the All-Weather before a good second at Southwell from just a 1lb lower mark and is worth another chance at a track thatfavoursfront-runners.

Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring, Winner’s Enclosure or anywhere in the vicinity of horses. At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
