RACE DESCRIPTIONS

2:20 THE RACING POST+ MAIDEN HURDLE RACE

3.22 THE RACING POST GO NORTH SEA

3.55

THE HERITAGE PORTFOLIO GO NORTH NIGHT

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

2.50 THE HERITAGE PORTFOLIO NEVER STANDING STILL NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two mile and seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

PIGEON HURDLE SERIES FINAL RACE

Our first series final is one for staying types, run over two miles and one a half furlong For horses aged four-yearsold and above, to be eligible for this contest horses they must have run at least once in a Go North Sea Pigeon Series qualifier, whilst also contesting three Jump races in the north Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

NURSE SERIES FINAL NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

Like our previous contest, this is also a series final, run over two miles and three and a half furlongs. For horses aged four-years-old and above, to be eligible for this contest horses they must have run at least once in a Go North Night Nurse Series qualifier, whilst also contesting three Jump races in the north. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

4.30 THE RACING POST GO NORTH BRINDISI BREEZE HURDLE SERIES FINAL RACE

This series final is one for staying types, this time running over three miles. For horses aged four-years-old and above, to be eligible for this contest horses they must have run at least once in the Go North Brindisi Breeze Series qualifier, whilst also contesting three Jump races in the north Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

5.00

THE HERITAGE PORTFOLIO MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only Just like the previous race, this is another series final and to qualify you must have which have started in three or more Jump races in the North, during the current season, at least one of which must have been a Go North Brindisi Breeze Series qualifier Their official rating will determine how much weight they carry.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
