TODAY’S RACING

THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

The feature race today comes at 3:55pm and is run over a mile for three-year-olds and upwards rated 56-75. Seven go to post for what promises to be a thrilling renewal, with SAVROLA heading the weights. Seve w Dianne Sayers five-year-old has been dropped 3lb after finishing last at Hamilton over half a furlong further. Today’s contest represents a drop in class and he’s now 6lb below his last winning mark. DAIN MA er NUT IN, despite being rated 4lb superior, finds himself in receipt of a 1lb due to his age. He’s fresh from a win over course and distance and still looks to be well in at the weights. Top jockey Paul Mulrennan takes over and he looks to be the likeliest winner

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

her clear at the top of the jockeys standings. PAUL MULRENNAN has five opportunities today to go further c be hoping to show improvement on two below par CHRIS’S MATE goes in the Novice Stakes, where he’ll ping sho e his best chance of a winner in our finale. The four-year-old efforts this season. INANNA could well be winn lisle and is well handicapped to go well once more. JOE FANNING sits on four is fresh from a win at Car winners this season but will be hoping to move up the leaderboard with four live chances today The pick w of the bunch is arguably ZARZYNI in the 4:30, who now sits on a very lenient mark. n v

TRAINERS TO WATCH

In the absence of KARL BURKE, it presents an excellent opportunity to JIM GOLDIE to improve on his position in the leaderboard. Despite only having runners in two races, he does have three and two runners in those races respectively and has certainly given himself every chance of grabbing a win. BRIAN ELLISON has three winners this season already and today has another four runners Pearl Sands would be the marginal pick of his two in our opener, while both SYBRAIS JEWEL and FREDDY ROBINSON have every chance of giving him winners today

4.30 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES

Our opener is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

IS ON COMEBACK TRAIL BIRTHDAY NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65

This race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

5.05 THE NATIONAL RACEHORSE WEEK 2024 HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

5.35 THE RADIO FORTH SUPERVAN HANDICAP STAKES

To round out today’s action is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACING.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.

3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
