T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE
Today’s feature race is the Musselburgh Gold Cup at 6.20pm There are eight runners set to contest this day’s race, with KNIGHTS AFFAIR having every chance for David O’Meara and David Nolan. The four-year-old ra a has been in fine form this season, winning twice and second on two further occasions. He has been raised nning ice a further 6lb for a win at Redcar but that may not be beyond him. ROBERT JOHNSON has dropped to just ther fo wi dcar RO above his last winning mark and with valuable 7lb claimer Rys Elliott on board, he may be ready to strike bove Elliot after going over a year without registering a win. TRAINERS TO WATCH
Top course trained KARL BURKE has just the one chance to try and get back on terms with JIM GOLDIE He is set to run Antonin Dvorak in the 4.45pm The juvenile went desperately close at our last meeting and very much sets the standard, it looks a great opportunity to get him to eight winners. Our current leader JIM GOLDIE has four chances to try and extend his lead. ANNANDALE goes in the opener, the seasoned veteran is teamed with the up and coming claimer Lauren Young, her 7lb claim could well be a big plus in a competitive looking field.

Our opener is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking
STAKES
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 60
This race is a two one mile four our and a half furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
7.18 THE EDMUNDSON ELECTRICAL PAISLEY HANDICAP STAKES
To round out today’s action, we have five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 55 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50

PLACING A BET
HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING
RACING.
2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

PLAY SMARTER
Aidan O’Brien typically holds a strong hand as he bids for a seventh success in the oldest Classic, while Ralph Beckett tries to win this with a filly once again, but SUNWAY looks the value call. His close second in the Irish Derby puts him right up there in terms of form and the longer distance promises to suit The unbeaten Jan Brueghel has the most potential in the field and rates the main threat, though stablemate Illinois is also well in the mix on his narrow Great Voltigeur second.

PLAY SMARTER
The front-running MRS BAGERRAN made a good return from an absence here recently and might prove the answer to this finale from a handy draw near the rail. Cuban Rock is back on the mark he defied at Hamilton in July and is second choice ahead of Ski Angel, who had an excuse here last time and has been cut some slack by the handicapper

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH
At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
