THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND THREE FURLONGS IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

Today’s feature race on Ladies Day is the Champagne Pommery Brut Royal Gold Cup Handicap Stakes at 3.50pm. oday’s Go Dual course and distance winner On A Session clearly likes it round here with two of his 5 victories coming here clearly w and his third last time out at Ayr could make him a leading player Judgment Call is another to score over course hird Judgme and distance and went close last month off top weight. Stepping up in class, he is another that can’t be overlooked stance clas in this competitive field. Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan are often hard to ignore in these sorts of races and Abduction takes on an easier task here, dropping 3lb in the handicap Last time out winner Gressington gets the g with Media Shooter, Dain Ma Nut In and Moreginplease. helping hand for being a three-year-old, along M

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

As mentioned in the feature race, PAUL MULRENNAN one to follow around here and he has a solid is always ng his way in all six races. JAMES DOYLE has been a book of rides throughout the afternoon, with action coming ng’s number one, enjoying a successful Glorious Goodwood man on a mission since becoming Wathnan Racing’s enjoyin e ride in the opener and it’s very hard to see connections travelling this far if He heads up north for just the sole and they don’t think they can win. JOANNA MASON has had 6 winners in her last 42 rides and she could go under ad the radar Joanna rides Cuban Cigar (3.20), Dain Ma Nut In (3.50), Glasses Up (4.20) and Code Purple (4.50) , Gla

TRAINERS TO WATCH

ED BETHELL is operating at a 24% strike rate in the past 14 days so his runners are surely worth a second look Ed saddles just one on this exciting card, with Gressington (3.50) taking action in today’s feature race which could prove a strong sign JIM GOLDIE again brings a strong force today and he will bid for glory with Abdcution in the feature race. However, Jim has another four across the six race card and it would be a shock if he were to leave empty handed throughout the afternoon. KARL BURKE is another with a strong strike rate recently and King Of Light (2.20) and Media Shooter (3.50) both stand chances.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

2.20 THE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF NOVICE STAKES

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

2.50 THE CELEBRATING LADIES DAY 20TH ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP STAKES

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

3.20 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY CUVEE LOUISE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile, five furlongs and 216 yard handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60

3.50 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY

BRUT ROYAL GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This seven furlong, 15 yard handicap race is for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85

Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

4.20 THE COPPER BLOSSOM LADIES DAY HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile, four furlongs, 104 yard handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

4.50 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY BRUT

ROSE HANDICAP STAKES

The last race today is another handicap run over one mile, 208 yards for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance

1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

PLACING A BET

HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING.

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses

Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse

3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club

3. PLACE YOUR BET

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

GOOD LUCK!

While the five rivals EVENING SAIGON beat on debut at Tipperary haven’t done much for the form since, it’s worth noting that four of them had the benefit of previous experience and two had already won a race Moreover, the son of Harry Angel looked a good prospect that day and he is taken to follow up on his first start in the colours of the burgeoning Wathnan Racing team. The sole filly in the line-up, Perfect Part, is feared most ahead of likely improver La Bellota.
