T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE

Today’s feature race is the Support Musselburgh Athletic FC Handicap Stakes, due to take place at 3.45pm Le Beau day’s Garcon, who will be ridden by Joanna Mason, will be looking to replicate his recent display at Thirsk in this contest The rec five-year-old kept on well last month to secure a victory ahead of the re-opposing Khabib. Having previously finished old on re-opp second at this course on two occasions, it would be no surprise if another impressive showing is on the cards for the d would im Michael & David Easterby-trained horse The aforementioned Khabib will be hoping to turn the tables on Le Beau Garcon after recently being defeated by 1/2 length. Trained by Ray Craggs, the six-year-old has finished fifth and second on r and Classy Al are also expected to challenge for the top prize here his previous two visits to Musselburgh Ghathanfar exp

2.15 THE CELEBRATING MUSSELBURGH FESTIVAL 2024 APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and 208 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65

This race is a one mile, four furlongs and 104 yards classified stakes for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50 Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

This five furlongs contest for horses aged three-years-old to five years-old is a restricted maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

4.50

THE RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile, seven furlongs and 217 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

5.25 THE LUCAS ICE CREAM HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

PLACING A BET

HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING

RACING.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.

3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
