This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 63 to 82 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70
Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this five furlongs contest for two-year-olds only, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing
This seven furlongs contest for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race Initially, the weights are set at 9st for colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.
This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 0 to 95 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance
1. PICK YOUR WINNER!
Colours: BLACK, YELLOW sleeves, BLACK armlets, BLACK cap, YELLOW stars. Form: 3200
(1 1/2m) in
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING
2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

PLAY SMARTER
Aidan O’Brien might hold the key to this race yet again. While LOS ANGELES was no striking winner of the Leopardstown Derby Trial on his fast-ground reappearance, he was nicely on top at the line and looks sure to benefit from the step up to 1 1/2m. He won’t be inconvenienced should there be any ease in the going having won a Group 1 on soft at 2 and looks a solid alternative to stablemate City of Troy, who looked outstanding at 2 but bombed out in the 2000 Guineas. Macduff is next on the list

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
