A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME.

Today’s feature race is the Virgin Bet Queen’s Cup, which features an exciting but competitive field. Bill’s Baar carries clos will be hoping to break his maiden tag in the Darley EBF Maiden Stakes but it looks no easy task Fiver Friday is his final ride for Irish trainer P Traynor, who will be hoping to give him a winner in out penultimate race. nor, giv
LUCINDA RUSSELL currently leads the way in our championship table and looks to have two good chances to extend her lead at the top. Johnny Ringo can be given a good shout in our first race under Paul Mulrennan, while Evaluation looks to have every chance in our feature race. IAIN JARDINE is in hot pursuit and today sends four runners competing across three of our contests Manu Et Corde and Ravenscraig Castle gives him two arrows in the feature, while Giselles Izzy and Bashful complete his lineup
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners ’ carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
Our next race is a seven-furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90
This race is a five-furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.
The feature race of the day on our return back to the flat is a one mile six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards, which always turns out to be a fabulous race As this is a heritage handicap, it will attract some high class horses but just like the last race, they concede plenty of weight to the lower rated rivals
This one-mile four and a half furlong maiden stakes is restricted to three-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
Our next contest this afternoon is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55
Our finale is the same race as the above but divided due to the number of entries A one mile handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.
GOOD LUCK!
THE WINNING TRAINER, JOCKEY, OWNER AND BEST TURNED OUT YARD WILL EACH RECEIVE PRIZES SPONSORED BY EDINBURGH GIN.
Good luck to all competitors in our first flat fixture of the season today. The championship table below is for our National Hunt season, which will be determined at our final jumps fixture on Friday 5th April.
We are delighted to be welcoming back the Corgi Derby to Musselburgh Racecourse. Originally ran in 2022 as part of our Jubilee Celebrations for the Late Queen Elizabeth II, we felt it fitting to move the famous Corgi Derby to our Easter Saturday Raceday. Today, our feature race is the Virgin Bet Queen’s Cup, a £100,000 highly competitive flat race with royal approval from the Late Queen Elizabeth II.
BECKETT
Super loving, fun corgi. Originally from Wales, Beckett spent the first year of his life in London, then moved up to Edinburgh. He loves the beach, any and all humans, and playing with his corgi friends! He’ll be four in April.
OWNER: Heather Sliman COLOUR: Mint green
BELAY
Belay is a 4 year old Pembroke corgi. She was born near Aberystwyth but currently lives in Sheffield where she spends most of her time playing with her partner in crime Hex (another corgi), chasing balls, eating unsuitable bits of tree and terrorising our chickens. She loves to shed hair on the sofa and be the centre of attention (and get all the cuddles she can).
OWNER: Adam Kuczynski COLOUR: Peach
Daisy is just over a year old She is fun loving and full of character. She is the Chief Yard Dog at Whitemoss Equestrian and takes her job watching over the horses very seriously! In the summer she loves roaming golf courses. Her favourite thing is to find something smelly and roll in it!

ELIZABETH
Ellie is pure breed corgi of Ukrainian champions, blessed to be born fluffy with unique face markings. She was born during covid times and travelled all the way from Ukraine to Scotland, just 5 months before the war started. She is obsessed with Spanish cheese "Quesso Manchego". This was our primary product for this race preparation. Moreover, she loves going to pubs and wine bars and is truly embracing the Scottish pub crawl culture.

OWNER: Fran Brandon COLOUR: Blue
Georgie (Burnanne Little Miss Sunshine) is 1.5 years old Pembroke Corgi. She is a very quiet loving wee dog who gets her speed from her dad who is like a whippet! OWNER: Nicki Scott COLOUR: Purple
GRAHAM
Graham is an American corgi who moved to Edinburgh along with his parents in late 2021. He is very active, and he loves to run and bark! He competed in the corgi derby last year and was close to finishing first, but got lost a few feet from the finish line!

1.50pm - Johnny Ringo is of some interest in the opening race He got off to winning ways in a Novice Stakes race at Newcastle for trainer Lucinda Russell in November, showing a good turn of foot at the closing stages of the race Preference however is for Individualism who finished 5th in a 13 runner Novice Stakes race at Newmarket in November The form of that race has worked out well with the winner and the 3rd placed horse both winning next time out. He has hit the crossbar on a couple of occasions but this looks like a good opportunity for him stepping up in trip to a mile for trainer Charlie Johnston.
2.25pm - There could be plenty more to come from Poet Master The 4 year old gelding is a course and distance winner and was an impressive winner last lime out at Doncaster on good to soft ground and the runner up in that race ran well subsequently in a filly and mares listed race at Ascot. Poet Master looks a very nice prospect for Karl Burke and a mark of 100 seems feasible to overcome Gweedore had two good runs towards the end of last season. He seems to run well fresh and has won here over course and distance so there is plenty to like about his chances today.
3.00pm - Zarzyni could well be involved here He has had two good recent runs on the all-weather at Newcastle but might want better ground than today’s going. Vintage Clarets won a nice handicap at York last September and followed up with a narrow win on heavy ground in a handicap at Catterick before finishing 3rd at Doncaster a week later He carries top weight here but has shown plenty of class and has previously run well fresh.
3.35pm - Sweet Fantasy was a runaway winner of a Novice Hurdle race at Catterick last time out, he looks interesting now back to flat racing off a mark of 87. Metier is also another horse returning to the flat and last year’s Chester Cup winner would find himself in the mix if he is able to replicate that performance again.
4.10pm - Clockwatcher showed some good ability at Kempton last month when finishing 2nd behind the Charlie Appleby trained Los Toldos The 4th horse in the race, Monterosa won next time out at Southwell and Clockwatcher makes appeal here for the shortlist. Flickering Halo has run well on the all-weather this year and looks to have good tactical pace Monsieur Melee steps up in trip and runs for the first time since being gelded. He is worth a market check.
4.45pm - Zargun was an eye catching winner at Doncaster last week. There could be another big run in him today if he handles the quick turnaround. Our Absent Friends is back to a mark of 75 and reverts to the turf after three runs on the all-weather He won off this mark at Ayr last year and is expected to go close here. Jordan Electrics is a course and distance winner. He was running very well last season including finishing 3rd in the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup He has claims here today on seasonal reappearance.
5.20pm - Bashful runs here after getting a wind-op A flat rating of 80 looks fair for this horse who has run both on the flat and over jumps Admiral Nelson ran a good 2nd behind Nikovo last time out at Newcastle. Another bold run is expected here on the turf off the same mark of 63.
5.50pm - Shine On Brendan (NAP) runs well on soft ground and had been running well last season against horses who went on to win more valuable races He looks well treated off 68 and a bold effort is expected here. Walsingham had been running last season in Ireland for Dermot Weld but is now switched to the David O’Meara yard. The horse is now gelded and could be a danger running in a handicap for the first time.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
