THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Thee feature race of Day 2 will be the bet365 Scottish Champion Cha Chase at 3:35. Nine will be taking to the track ck for this exciting looking contest and OUTLAW PETER looks like an early contender. Trained by Paul Nicholls holls the gelding has thrived since switching to chasing in Sep September, scoring on his ﬁrst attempt over the fences at Newton Abbott. He was also a strong second in a Kempton handicap on Boxing Day and nd comes into this in ﬁne form. Olly Murphy’s THUNDER ROCK loo looked sharp when scoring at Carlisle in November and despite being pulled up after some poor jumping las last time out, he could be a real threat.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H DEREK FOX and BRIAN HUGHES look set to do battle once again at th the top of the jockey’s championship with five rides apiece here today. Derek Fox links up with Lucinda Russell ssell aboard Bollinge Bollingerandkrug in the 1.50. The gelding had a tremendous 2023, racking up four wins from five starts at Kelso throughout the year, he flattered to deceive last time out at Newbury however, er, finishing fifth of six in December but he should bounce back here. Brian Hughes will be onboard Titanium Moon in the 2:25, the Scottish Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and looks to be the favourite there. The mare has one her last four starts, all withh Brian in the saddle and has shown sho no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

TRAINERS TO WATCH LUCINDA RUSSELL has another seven declared to run here and stands every chance of increasing her lead in the Musselburgh trainer’s championship. She has a number of likely types including the aforementioned Bollingerandkrug as well as Corrigeen Rock in the 3:35. DONALD MCCAIN will be another to keep an eye on as he has Titanium Moon in the 2:25 and the PAUL NICHOLLS trained Liari looks a real standout in the day’s opener, the 1:20. The gelding is a son of Cracksman and is on course for the hattrick after his prior successes at Wincanton and Aintree and should prove far too much for his rivals once again.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.20 THE BET365 SCOTTISH TRIUMPH HURDLE (LISTED RACE) Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this one mile, seven and a half furlongs hurdle race will now have an ofﬁcial rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, weight is allocated according to age and sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 3lb for success in a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 hurdle and 5lb for winners of a Class 1 weight-for-age race.

1.50 THE NEVER ORDINARY AT BET365 HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.25 THE BET365 SCOTTISH SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular one mile, seven and a half furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

3.00 THE PERTEMPS NETWORK GROUP HANDICAP HURDLE This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 145 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 140.

3.35 THE BET365 SCOTTISH CHAMPION CHASE This is a two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

4.05 THE BET365 HANDICAP HURDLE This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

4.35 THE BET365 OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are deﬁned below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

Gordon Elliott’s charge has some useful form in the book and she may find that the addition of a first-time tongue-tie unlocks some improvement, with Danny Gilligan’s 5lb claim of value too. Although the progressive Feet Of A Dancer faces her stiffest assignment to date, the Authorized mare may not have reached her ceiling just yet.

2018 winner We Have A Dream won a Grade 1 at Aintree same year. Carlito Brigante, 4th in 2010, won the 2011 Coral Cup. Tommy’s Oscar, runner-up in 2021, has won six races since, including in Grade 2 company. 4th placed Third Time Lucki has since become a Grade 2 winner over fences & 6th Belfast Banter won the 2021 County Hurdle at Cheltenham, followed by a Grade 1 at Aintree. 2015 winner Some Plan won the Grade 1 Irish Arkle two years later.

Seddon, runner in 2022, went on to The win a Class 1 at the Cheltenham Pertemps Festival in 2023. Brandy McQueen, 2023 winner, went on to run well in Network the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham. Group The winner of the final, Good Time Handicap Jonny, also won at Musselburgh in Hurdle Race January 2020.

The bet365 Scottish Champion Chase

Won in 2020 by Greanateen who won both the Grade 1 bet365 Celebration Chase and Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase in 2021. Also won in 2017 by San Benedeto before landing a Grade 1 at Aintree in the same year. This year’s Scottish Champion Chase is now run over two and a half miles, with prize money investment of £80,000.

Did you know?

The races connection with the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival is the Bowes-Lyon Trophy. The Queen Mother was a Bowes-Lyon from Glamis Castle. The Queen Mother’s nephew, David Bowes-Lyon made a significant contribution to Musselburgh Racecourse as a member of the Racecourse Committee and the winner of the Scottish Champion Chase receives the Bowes-Lyon Trophy.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical edical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especiall especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erect erected around a fallen horse.

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
