THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today’s day’s feature race will be the bet365 Edinburgh National Handica Handicap Chase, taking place at 2:15. A competitive titive 13-strong field goes to post here with the Gavin Cromw Cromwell trained PEACHES AND CREAM looking an early contender. While the veteran nine-year-old hasn’t scored sc since winning a handicap over this trip rip at Punchestown in April, there has been some signs of a reviv revival lately. A promising run in a premier handicap andicap at Cheltenham in November showing there is still plenty of life in the gelding. Hoping to stop him will be Alastair Ralph’s MAGNA SAM. The gelding won this race in fifine style last year and there is nothing to suggest he can’t do it again here today.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES and DEREK FOX continue to be neck and neck at the top of the jockey’s championship, with the pair currently tied on four wins each. Brian will have six rides on today’s card, starting with the intriguing General Ofﬁcer in the 1:40. The gelding has picked up one win and three seconds in his last four, most recently when second at Aintree on Boxing Day and look looks a good bet in the opener. He’ll also ride Gavin Cromwell’s Routine Excellence in the 4:00 Derek Fox meanwhile has four rides including aboard Inis Oirr in the feature racee and has every chance of ups upsetting the leading duo.

TRAINERS TO WATCH Continuing to dominate the trainer’s championship, leading course trainer LUCINDA RUSSELL has seven declared runners here today as she attempts to pull further clear of the pack. Inis Oirr will be her ﬁrst likely contender of the day in the second race. She also has Caithness in the 2:50 with the gelding starting this season with back-to-back successes at Kelso and has every chance of going well again here. Cadell struggled in Grade 2 company at Cheltenham in December but the step back down in Grade will surely beneﬁt him as he attempts to win in the 3:25.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1.40 THE BET365 FRODON NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP CHASE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁ cial start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two miles, about four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged ﬁve-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

2.15 THE BET365 EDINBURGH NATIONAL HANDICAP CHASE This is a three miles, about seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.50 THE BET365 SCOTTISH COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE This is a one mile, about seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 145 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 140.

3.25 THE BET365 SCOTTISH STAYERS’ NOVICES’ HURDLE This three mile hurdle race is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged ﬁve-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than three hurdle races. Initially, the weights are set according to sex with ﬁllies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous hurdle race winners are allocated a penalty for each race won. This penalty will be 5lb for winners of a Class 3 to Class 5 and 8lb for two hurdle victories or for scoring in a Class 1 or 2 hurdle.

4.00 THE BET365 HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles, about seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

4.35 THE GLYNN CARROLL HANDICAP HURDLE This one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

The bet365 Scottish Cheltenham Trials: Saturday's History of Runners The bet365 Frodon Novices' Chase Did you know?

The bet365 Edinburgh National

Won by multiple Grade 1 winner Frodon himself in 2017 as the launchpad to a stellar career. Divers won in 2011 before following up at Cheltenham. Douglas Talking, 2022 winner, went on to be runner up in a Class 1 at Aintree. Frodon is now happily retired on Dartmoor, being looked after by his regular race winning jockey Bryony Frost. “His days now will be filled with joining Black Corton, carefree, galloping across the moor, beach rides, all you can eat haynet and whatever he finds fun!”

Winner from 2021 Mighty Thunder close second in Midlands National before winning Scottish Grand National. Missed Approach, 2nd in 2018, won Kim Muir at Cheltenham same year. 2023 winner Magna Sam went on to place in the Scottish Grand National, while runner up Captain Cattistock won a Class 2 at Cheltenham in April.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical edical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especiall especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erect erected around a fallen horse.
