THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today’s day’s feature race falls at 1:20. A Limited Novice Chase contested by a competitive looking field of six, with James ames Owen’s GRONZI heading the weights. The eight-year-old is only having his second start for his new yard but was more than capable when trained by Charles Byr Byrnes. He made a more than pleasing returnn at Doncaster and is well worth another go with that run und under his belt. John McConnell’s lightly raced aced five-year-old JACKPOT DE CHOISEL is having his first start over fences after being tried in some very good novice races over hurdles. He has his share of ability and shou should he take to the larger obstacles he could be hard to peg back.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES and DEREK FOX cannot be separated at thee to top of the jockey’s championship, with the pair tied on four wins apiece. Brian has five rides on today’s card, with the first coming in the 12:45 for trainer Donald McCain. Chatshow Host races ces off a nice weight but has failed to have much of an impact in both hurdles starts so far. Whitehaven found only one better last time out at Bangor-On-Dee and looks the pick of the bunch to get him into the winners’ enclosure. CRAIG NICHOL sits just behind the leading duo on three and looks too have a great chance to join tthem on four with WE STILL BELIEVE.

TRAINERS TO WATCH Leading course trainer LUCINDA RUSSELL has an impressive nine declared runners, that she will be hoping can take her further clear of the chasing pack. So They Say is partnered by the talented Patrick Wadge in our opener and he’ll be hoping to make it an early double with Josie Alice should So They Say oblige in the first. JOHN MCCONNELL sends over two to try and continue his impressive season. Jackpot de Choisel is likely to be popular in our feature race while Lieutenant Mayne will bid to try and send the trainer home victorious in our finale.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12.10 THE TOTE PLACEPOT, WIN WITHOUT A WINNER CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP CHASE Our first race is a two mile seven and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is specifically for Conditional Jockeys, who’s weight is determined by winners rode.

12.45 THE TOTE GUARANTEE, BET SMARTER MAIDEN HURDLE The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged five-years-old and upwards in this three mile race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

1.20 THE NEW TOTE MULTIPLES ONLY ON-COURSE NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile, four and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170..

1.55 THE TOTE.CO.UK YOUR FIRST PLACE FOR RACING HANDICAP HURDLE This is a two mile and four furlong handicap hurdle race four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

2.30 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP HURDLE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile novices hurdle is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two races over hurdles.

3.05 THE @TOTERACING ON TWITTER (NOT X) HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

3.40 THE TOTE.CO.UK BACK TO WORK MONDAY OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE The final race on the day, as the title suggests, is a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that. 3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical edical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. ys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especiall especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinaryy attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to mak make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see screens erect erected around a fallen horse.
