STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that. 3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Thee action of today’s feature race kicks off at 2.20pm. Nine runners will contest the tote.co.uk Auld Reekie Handicap cap Chase. There are a few notable entries including the Dan Skelton-trained S Frere D’Armes. Half Shot wonn here last month and the 10-year-old will be aiming to make iit back-to-back victories for trainer Iain Jardine. ardine. Another to have won last time out and again at this cou course is Cracking Destiny. The veteran 11-year-old 1-year-old has been in consistent form in 2023 and Ewan Whillan Whillans will be hoping his runner will end the year on a high. Fergal O’Brien has been in good form recently, hhaving had eight wins from his last 26 runners (31% strike rate for the past 14 days) s) and he enters Before Midnight. M

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H PATRICK WADGE has been in red hot form recently, having ng hhad nine wins from his last 26 rides at a strike rate of 34.6%. He heads here for two rides andd they come on Divas D Doyen at 2.55pm and Aurora Thunder at 3.30pm. In the past month RYAN AN MANIA has had four win wins from his 20 rides and he’ll have three chances to add to that at here. He is set to ride Benson at 1.10pm, C Carcaci Castle at 1.45pm and Bass Rock at 2.20pm. FREDDIE GINGELL has had a 20% strike rate for the past month and he’ll be hoping his rides on Afadil at 1.10pm and Panjari ari at 1.45pm can boost that that.

TRAINERS TO WATCH Leading course trainer LUCINDA RUSSELL has six chances to add to her three winners at Musselburgh this season and they include Rory The Cat at 12.35pm, Corrigeen Rock in the feature race and Indian Louis at 2.55pm. IAIN JARDINE will be aiming to overtake Russell as the leading course trainer and he has four runners to attempt to do so include La Quarite in the opener and Slugger in the 1.45pm. Usual suspect DONALD MCCAIN has four chances to add to his tally including Union Flag in the first and Lunar Power in the 1.10pm.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12.35 THE TOTE.CO.UK HAIR OF THE DOG JUVENILE HURDLE RACE Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two miles hurdle race is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 7lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 7lb for a Class 4 or 5 hurdle race or 12lb for a Class 1 to 3 hurdle race victory.

1.10 THE TOTE.CO.UK HOGMANEIGH HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1.45 THE TOTE.CO.UK NEW YEAR NEW ME HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

2.20 THE TOTE.CO.UK AULD REEKIE HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.55 THE TOTE.CO.UK GYM MEMBERSHIP RENEWED NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

3.30 THE TOTE.CO.UK DRY JANUARY STARTS NOW HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.

PLAY SMARTER

TEORIE overcame a few indifferent leaps to make a winning start over hurdles at Catterick 13 days ago and is taken to follow up. Union Flag will give him something to think about if back to the form he showed when winning over C&D, while a market move for Churchwarden would be very interesting given John McConnell’s excellent recent record in this race.
