THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.
TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE
Thee action of today’s feature race kicks off at 1.55pm. The market seems to be siding with the Ann Hamilton-trained Hello Judge udge who won a class four event at Carlisle but seemed to struggle of off this mark last time out at Newcastle. Hopefully he can bounce back today. Restandbethankful is the in-form horse ho in the field with some good recent efforts and was just touched off here last month. He usually runs over two miles m so he could be interesting back over this trip, while similar comments can be made for Dancewiththewind who continues to slide in the weights. There should be some improvement for Warriors Story with the first time headgea headgear applied and you know he will stay after showing his stamina over further. Jackhammer runs from out the handicap handica which means Henry Brooke could have his work cut out and the seven-strong field is concluded oncluded with Fete Champetre Champ and Marajman.
JOCKEYS TO WATCH H WILLIAM MAGGS has become a useful conditional jockey and today has ttwo rides across the seven race card. With two win in his previous six rides, he is currently operating at a 33% % strike rate and has the chance to add more to his tally with Just Call Me Al (12.25) and Lihyan (2.25). The ever ver consistent BRIAN HUGHES hhas also seen five winners from his last 30 rides as he bids to close thee gap on Sean Bowen for the 2023/24 jockey’s championship. cha He has a strong set of rides here with and closes out the day riding One More Stroke who has finished run runner-up on both starts to date. Also look out for HENRY BROOKE who has three rides des tomorrow but his main oppo opportunity looks to lie with Heart Above (12.55).
TRAINERS TO WATCH Usual suspect DONALD MCCAIN brings his firepower back to Musselburgh and he has had some big priced winners over the last 14 days. He is operating at a 21% strike rate and saddles 4 here today, including the re-opposing Maggie O (1.25) who won at Doncaster last month. Also with a strong strike rate is REBECCA MENZIES who has had 4 winners from her last 12 saddles. She has two chances of success here with Lenebane (1.25) and Lihyan (2.25) who will have to defy top-weight. It is interesting to see NICKY RICHARDS saddle just one across the card and the debutant Yakaleo must be worth a second look in the bumper.
RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12.25 THE TOTE.CO.UK SEVEN SWANS A SWIMMING CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE Our opener is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is for conditional jockeys only.
12.55 THE TOTE.CO.UK SIX GEESE A LAYING MAIDEN HURDLE RACE The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and four furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
1.25 THE TOTE.CO.UK FIVE GOLD RINGS MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a one mile and seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.
1.55 THE TOTE.CO.UK FOUR CALLING BIRDS NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged four-yearsold and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.
2.25 THE TOTE.CO.UK THREE FRENCH HENS HANDICAP HURDLE RACE The fifth race on the card is a two miles and four furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-yearolds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
2.55 THE TOTE.CO.UK TWO TURTLE DOVES HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles and seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
3.25 THE TOTE.CO.UK A PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five year olds will be run over one mile and seven furlongs.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

HAVEYOUGOTMYMONEY failed to stay 3 1/4m at Kelso last time and is taken to resume winning ways now back at 3m. Last-time-out C&D scorer Sanosuke rates an obvious danger, while Blended Stealth wasn’t too far behind Nick Alexander’s charge on that occasion and should also have a part to play if reacting well to a change of headgear.
