TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Seven ven head to the post for today’s feature race, the G & H Flooring Contr Contractors Handicap Hurdle Race which starts at 2.10pm. Sandy Thomson’s gelding Kilbrainy looks to be an early contender. c The seven-year-old started this season on off with a bang, he ran out a comfortable eight and a half le lengths winner at Kelso though he was unable le to carry on that form to Carlisle when last seen. That result look looks like an anomaly though so expect to doo better here. Curley Finger is a former course and distance winner, scoring sco over this trip in March but Rebecca Menzies’ gelding has flattered to deceive since then. Aurora Thunder is fancied to do well, Lucinda Russell’s experienced mare has every chance of getting back in the win column hhere for the first time since January 2022.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H Ever reliable at this course, BRIAN HUGHES has four strong rides onn this seven race card and Wholeofthemoon looks to be the pick of the bunch. Racing in the 11.55am, the four-year-old r-year-old has looked looke lively since his debut and is likely to prove too much to handle for his rivals today. RYAN YAN MANIA has an impressive 18% strike rate at Musselburgh over the last five years and he has five rides across the card today and Kilbrainy looks look to have every chance in the 2.10pm with the gelding looking to bounce back from a modest effort when last seen. Meanwhile Conor Rabbitt’s 21% strike rate in the last month marks him m out as one to watch. He rides CConquer The Breeze in the first.

TRAINERS TO WATCH DONALD MCCAIN brings three with him for todays card. He has Wholeofthemoon in the first before last time out winner Maggie O takes centre stage at 1.00pm. His final entrant sees Lubenham Dream make his first start in the finale. LUCINDA RUSSELL brings eight with her today. I Am Gonna Be in the 1.35pm looks to be the pick of her collection after the mares impressive second at Ayr on her seasonal return earlier this month and she has looks likely to go one better today. NICKY RICHARDS has his yard in fine form at the moment with a 27% strike rate in the last month and he will have the well fancied Florida Dreams in the opener.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 11.55 THE BET ON THIS RACE IN RUNNING WITH BETVICTOR MAIDEN HURDLE (GBB RACE) The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this one mile, seven and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

12.25 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1.00 THE NODRAM DECORATORS LTD MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (GO NORTH LADY BUTTONS SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

1.35 THE BETVICTOR BETTING AFTER THE OFF HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH MONET’S GARDEN QUALIFIER) This is a two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.10 THE G & H FLOORING CONTRACTORS HANDICAP HURDLE (CHALLENGER STAYERS’ HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) This three mile handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 130. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

2.45 THE BET AT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH RED RUM SERIES QUALIFIER) The penultimate race this afternoon is a two mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-yearold and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

3.20 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM “NEWCOMERS” NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GBB RACE) As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!
