THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today’s ay’s feature race will be the James and Gloria Roche Handicap Chase at 2.45 2.45pm and it looks set to be a competitive contest. Half Shot looks like one to watch, the nine-year-old won at this meeting last year (albeit in a different race) and was on a real hot streak last season. He recorded two wins and three placed efforts effo in just the seven runs. He has looked in fine form orm so far this season too. Magna Sam is a former course and distance win winner and the experienced nine-year-old has found ound plenty of success at this track in his career. He has yet to feature since finis finishing fifth in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr in April however, though he has run well off the back of a long break before before. Lucinda Russell’s Methodtothemadness is another who loves this course but she hasn’t beenn seen since finishing last of three t at Perth in May.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES is always one to watch at a northern jumps meeting ting and he has five strong rides today. The most interesting of these could be Quaresome in the first, the five-year-old e-year-old was a ve very strong second at this course earlier this month and could be on track to go one better. In the second he forgoe forgoes his usual partnership with Donald McCain to ride Leap Year Ladd for Kevin Ryan and if he takes to the hurdles, th this gelding looks to have every chance of scoring here on his jumps debut. SEAN QUINLAN is often a safe bet hhere as well and he will have five rides across the day. Keep an eye on Half Shot ot in the feature contest for Qui Quinlan, he looks a clear standout in that race.

TRAINERS TO WATCH It is very hard to stay away from DONALD MCCAIN here as he is often the man to follow at Musselburgh and today is unlikely to prove any different. He saddles five today with the aforementioned Quaresome in the 11:55, Cofficionado in the 12:25, Blueberry Wine in the 13:00, Never No Trouble in the 1:35 who looks to try and break his streak of four consecutive placed finishes to clutch a win and Tim Pat in the 2:45. LUCINDA RUSSELL will also have plenty on offer today too with eight declared to run. Garde Des Champs in the 13:00 looks set to be one to watch from her impressive selection here today.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 11:55 THE MAXRECYCLE WASTE MASTERS NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-yearsold and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races/two steeple chases.

12.25 THE GLYNN CARROLL MEMORIAL JUVENILE MAIDEN HURDLE (GO NORTH GREY BOMBER HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this one mile, seven and a half furlongs hurdle race is allotted 11st 2lb (fillies 10st 9lb), before previous winners are given a 5lb penalty for winning a race previously.

1:00 THE OCEANEERING GEORGE MACPHAIL RETIREMENT HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH ONE MAN SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1.35 THE SPONSOR THE SALTIRE FOR A DAY MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GO NORTH LADY BUTTONS SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

2.10 THE ATHELSTANEFORD - BIRTHPLACE OF THE SALTIRE HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GO NORTH SEA PIGEON SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.45 THE JAMES AND GLORIA ROCHE HANDICAP CHASE This one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

3.20 THE MAXRECYCLE HANDICAP HURDLE RACE Our finale this afternoon is a three mile handicap hurdle race for three-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

Irish challenger OTTIZZINI was flying too high when seventh in a Down Royal Grade 3 last time but holds much the best form and can quickly resume winning ways. Both The Kalooki Kid and Lavida Adiva have better days ahead of them and appeal as the duo to chase home Stuart Crawford’s fairly useful mare in that order.

The betting will obviously tell a tale given a couple are hurdling debutants, but preference is for THREE YORKSHIREMEN, who was a little expensive to follow for Richard Fahey but could well be up to making a winning start in this sphere for his new stable. There was enough promise in Cofficionado’s hurdling debut effort, so he’s put forward as the main danger, with Leap Year Lad rounding off the shortlist.
