THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

A competitive ompetitive 5 runners head to post for today’s feature race, the Prince Philip Perpetual Challenge Trophy Handicap Chase which starts at 3.25pm. Fidelio Vallis is clear at the ratings but therefor therefore has to give a huge amount of weight away andd hasn’t been seen for 276 days and could possibly need the run. Th The preference in the market is for course and distance winner Cedar Hill in the hands of Ryan Mania. He has been in cracking form at Kelso recently and only found ound the classy Tommy’s Oscar too strong last time out. Other course and distance d winner in the field Cracking Destiny is the outsider of the 5 but still is by no means discounted in what shou should be a tactical affair. Restandbethankful and Dreams Of Hope make up the quintet, withh slight preference for the lat latter with Brian Hughes doing the steering.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES has four strong rides on the seven race card rd an and Union Flag looks to have an excellent chance at success after a solid third on debut. BRUCE LYNN has been operating o at a 27% strike rate over the last 14 days so is clearly one to follow today. He rides Sanosuke (1 (12.35) who looks to have a decent chance in our opener and Artic Row (2.50) who has subsequently un undergone a wind surgery from last season. SEAN QUINLAN has six booked rides across the day and he rides for several trainers today, suggesting he has a lot of trust from m them.

TRAINERS TO WATCH It is very hard to stray away from DONALD MCCAIN here as he is usually the man to follow at Musselburgh and today should prove no different. He teams up with usually suspect Brian Hughes in numerous races but also saddles top-weight Finisk River with 10lb claimer Charlie Maggs taking the ride in the opener. Nicky Richards is another strong fancy and is currently operating at a 30% strike rate, after landing three of his last 10 saddles. He only has two chances here but they require the up-most respect. Lucinda Russell has kept her yard very busy with 40 runners in the last 14 days and also demands respect.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:35 THE RACINGTV.COM/FREETRIAL CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GO NORTH BRINDISI BREEZE SERIES QUALIFIER) Our opner is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is for conditional jockeys’ only.

1.05 THE WATCH RACING TV FREE FOR 31 DAYS ‘INTRODUCTORY’ JUVENILE HURDLE RACE (GO NORTH GREY BOMBER JUVENILE HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two miles hurdle race is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 7lb), before previous winners are given a 5lb penalty for winning a race previously.

1:40 THE GET CLOSER WITH A RACINGTV FREETRIAL NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GBB RACE) Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

2.15 THE CLOSE BROTHERS AND CMS MCKENNA HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH ONE MAN SERIES QUALIFIER) This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

2.50 THE START YOUR RACINGTV FREE TRIAL NOW NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE This two miles and four furlongs steeple chase is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than two steeple chases. This particular novice handicap chase is for horses rated 0-100.

3.25 THE PRINCE PHILIP PERPETUAL CHALLENGE TROPHY HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE) This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

4.00 THE RACINGTV FOR FREE NOW AT RACINGTV.COM/FREETRIAL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE Our finale is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

PLAY SMARTER

This rates more demanding than the assignments HAVEYOUGOTMYMONEY has faced of late, yet Paul Robson’s 5-y-o is steadily going the right way and having still looked ahead of his mark for a long way at Kelso 11 days ago, he’s fancied to prove the point with the drop back in trip a likely plus. Faithfulflyer and Finisk River head up the dangers, with last year’s winner Rickety Gate and Curley Finger also not out of things.

PLAY SMARTER

The three rivals IMPRESSION CHIC beat when making a winning chase debut at Fontwell have done little for the form since, but she is open to improvement in this sphere and a 4lb rise for that success is hardly prohibitive. Kap Chidley made a positive start to the season when runner-up at Uttoxeter and he is second choice ahead of Marajman and chase debutant Artic Row.

PLAY SMARTER

This can go the way of FIDELIO VALLIS, who shaped as if as good as ever on his first outing since leaving Paul Nicholls when runner-up over C&D back in February and having gone well fresh in the past, he can go a place better following another absence. Cedar Hill arrives at the top of his game, so he’s put forward as the main danger, with Dreams of Home taken to fill third spot.

PLAY SMARTER

A tricky event, in which the veteran VOIX DU REVE is fancy to resume winning ways having quickly slipped back near the mark from which he won at Ayr late last season. Theatre Legend missed the bulk of last season but went with plenty of enthusiasm when narrowly denied at Sedgefield last time and should be in the mix again provided there’s no “bounce,” whilst Collingham has a fine record fresh and held his form well last term, so also merits consideration.
