A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA

A 66-85 handicap over a furious five furlongs is our feature race today Top weight Rock Melody now only 6-85 ture sits 2lb above her last winning mark, which incidentally came over course and distance back in July She's u entitled to run well but may just need the handicapper to relent a little more before she can get her head in front. Ramon Di Loria is now eight wins without a run but has previously threatened form a higher mark ont. ria w evi Rowan Scott now takes the ride and he could prove dangerous off a mark of 72. Sugar Baby has been one nning once and placing twice this season He rarely runs a bad of the more consistent types in the field, winning t e than capable Jason Hart. race and will be in the mix under the more

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

He rides in five of our seven contests with a CLIFFORD LEE looks to have a very strong book of rides. ri e will bid to defy top wright and take the Listen To few looking to have very good chances. Spanish Hustle ecret has been in excellent form of late, winning three of his Heart Scotland Handicap The son of Pearl Secret another great opportunity to get into the winners' enclosure JASON HART last six starts and this looks has a ride in all but one race and could well travel back home with a couple of winners at the end of the day. Spartakos could strike in the lucky last after a running a nice race at Catterick on his previous start y r

TRAINERS TO WATCH

JACK CHANNON has just the two runners on todays card, and his first runner looks to be in with a great chance Hiromichi is the first, with Clifford Lee taking the ride He now drops to a mark of 72 after a coupe of disappointing efforts, any rain would help his case and his last win did come from the same mark His other runner Kalama Sunrise tries handicapping for the first time but hasn't shown much to date She will need to take a big step forward from her novice races. KEVIN PHILIPPART DE FOY sends just the one runner in the 3:25 from his base at Suffolk, a long way to travel if he didn't think he had a chance!

TODAY’S RACING

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

2:15 THE BRITISH EBF 40TH ANNIVERSARY FILLIES' CONDITIONS STAKES

Our opening race is a five furlongs conditions stakes for for two-year-old fillies only, which are E.B.F. eligible. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, this race is restricted to those which have not won a Class 1 race in 2022

2:50 THE SANDS RUBY ANNIVERSARY NOVICE STAKES

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile and one furlong There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

3:25 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

4:00

THE BETVICTOR BETTING AFTR THE OFF HANDICAP STAKES

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

4:35 THE LISTEN TO HEART SCOTLAND HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

5:10 THE MUSSELBURGH GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

5:45 THE RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance

PLACING A BET

HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING.

1.

PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse

3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

None of the quartet can be ruled out but the vote goes to LADY PINK ROSE who holds the edge on form and could take another step forward now the hood goes on having been too free at Newbury last time Debut Wolverhampton scorer Shuangxi could emerge as the chief threat if, as expected, building on that victory, with the more experienced duo Indispensable and Ziggy’s Queen not discounted either

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty of these hold few secrets and it could just pay to take a chance on a handicap debutante in the shape of KALAMA SUNRISE. Ultimately well beaten all 3 starts in novice company, she should find this sort of assignment much more suitable from a low opening mark and it would come as no surprise to see her do better Spartakos and Doomsday head the dangers, with Turbo Command another not out of things

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

e ys t especiall rd b y some vironment,

u

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
