The inform Grant Tuer goes in search of continuing his winning streak with Showtime Mahomes in the Travis Perkins Handicap at 6:00pm The son of Dabirism has dropped to 7lb below his last winning mark and was only beaten three lengths at Thirsk on his previous outing. TIM EASTERBY is a regular at the track and has three runners at both ends of the card. War Defender looks to have every chance in our opener but is tasked with carrying top weight Marbuzet should go well in our penultimate race under David Allan but does looks to face some competitive opposition. JIM GOLDIE has been in flying form, with eight winners from his last 38 runners He sends four runners to the track, with Bobby Shaftoe looking to take advantage of a step up in trip, in the Napier Construction Handicap His last win came over a similar trip, so he has to enter calculations
3:42 THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND TROPHY APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES
Our opener is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
4:15 THE NATIONAL RACEHORSE WEEK NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65
4:50 THE SCOTS ASSOCIATION NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES
Also a nursery handicap our third race instead is over five furlongs and again is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65
5:25 THE IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES (GBB RACE)
This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking
6:00 THE TRAVIS PERKINS HANDICAP STAKES
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
Our penultimate race is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
To round out today's action, we have five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 55 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50

1.
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse
3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

PLAY SMARTER
Just the 9 runners for the oldest Classic but it has a very open feel to it CONTINUOUS took his form to a whole new level in a well-run race when a decisive winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York and that marks him out as the one to beat with this trip likely to unlock even more. Gregory failed to land the odds in that race but he carried a penalty that day and this contest will play to his strengths (though Dettori now rides Arrest). At longer odds, Tower of London cannot be ruled out

The vote goes to SHOWTIME MAHOMES, who has shaped as though his turn is near in two starts since returning from a break, latterly when upped to this trip at Thirsk where he put in good late work from a compromising position. Black Friday is also entitled to respect.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
