A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
Jim Goldie will have his sights set high in the Garden Stirling Burnet Portobello Cup Handicap Stakes as he saddles Portobel the hat-trick seeking Baez, over this staying trip of two miles and two furlongs and Two Auld Pals Both runners have trick attracted a wide share of the market and should go well. Yorkindness also bids for the hat-trick and is quickly turned d b around after her duo of wins at Pontefract and despite going up 5lb, she could prove dangerous The only distance nd co winner Blow Your Horn went through a golden spell in June, but the handicapper looks to have the six-year-old in his r as one mile and six furlongs so there are plenty of question marks grasp currently. Glasses Up has only gone as far furlon Star who has not proved effective over this trip, albeit over hurdles. over his stamina and the same applies to Simple
DANNY TUDHOPE only has the three rides throughout the six an eyecatching debut when second and Danny's other Testing in the first, teaming up with Tom Clover. He made de re (4.00) who bids to make it three on the bounce BEN CURTIS rides include Musical Diva (2.30) and How Bizarre who trike rate, with 11 winners in his last 46 rides at the time of writing. He has a full has been operating at a 24% strike book of rides on the day and Love De Vega (3.00) looks hard to dismiss. JOE FANNING heads up north and is booked to ride on four chances too, with On A Session (3.00) and Yorkindness (3.30) both holding solid claims h A Yor
race card, but he gets the leg up on Character
JIM GOLDIE holds to fine chances at a gold medal in our feature race and again the leading trainer in our championship sends a strong hand here, with Abduction (3.00) another one of today's leading contenders Although not in the strongest form currently, his runners must be feared. TIM EASTERBY is arguably not known for his success at Musselburgh but nevertheless he is a class act. He interestingly sends just two here today which include Manigordo (3.00) and Revoquable (4.30)
CHARLIE JOHNSTON sends his usual force of runners here, with five across the day, and he clearly thinks this first race is winnable with either Ready Or Nott or Gone Rogue
This race is a seven furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking. Colts and geldings will carry 9st 7lb, while fillies carry 9st 2lb. A 2lb allowance is allowed if a horse is from Band C or D.
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 60
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80
3:30 THE GARDEN STIRLING BURNET PORTOBELLO CUP HANDICAP STAKES
This is a two miles and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
4:00 THE MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING COMPANY HANDICAP STAKES
Our penultimate race is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
4:30 THE SALLYPORT COMMERCIAL FINANCE AND AAB GROUP HANDICAP STAKES
To round out today's action, we have one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 55 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance
1.
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse
3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
