A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
This evenings feature race is the penultimate race of the day, The 100% Racing TV Profits Back To Racing Handicap is where we have nine runners go to post Top of our trainer/jockey championship, Paul Mulrennan and Jim Goldie, champion team up with Cuban Rock who only finished a length behind the rapidly improving Barollo so offers some of the Cuban im strongest form in the race. Wreck It Ryley appreciated the step up to seven furlongs at Ayr last time out and will be gest looking to go in again, off just a 2lb higher mark, and had Rwenearlytheredad well held that day. Keep Me Stable oking Rwenearlythere has been given a huge chance by the handicapper being dropped 4lb for a below-par effort at Newcastle, while ks ago also Mai Alward finished a solid third there two week
It would be hard to not mention this season's leading jockey eing booked on the ride in the first two races this has a solid book of rides once again. Although not being er four BEN CURTIS looks to be in with a great chance of evening, look out for his talent in the other ay in the opener. He looks the best horse in the race and should shed his success as he rides Fiver Friday opener hors maiden tag, setting Ben up nicely for a full book of rides on tonight's card JASON WATSON also looks to have some nice rides this evening and should be watched with a keen eye, also g t
ey at Musselburgh PAUL MULRENNAN who
JIM GOLDIE extended his lead in the championship with another victory here at our last meeting. It would be no shock to see him have another winner this evening, as he saddles five runners who all remain with chances. Blue Antares scored convincing at Ripon last time out for CHARLIE JOHSNTON and he often brings a strong hand here and this meeting looks no different. He sends just three here, but it would be a surprise to not see one of them come out with gold Tracy Waggot has a 21% strike rate at Musselburgh, so she is another trainer that has to be feared, saddling Mrs Bagerran in the 6.30pm
This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65, to be ridden by Amateur Jockeys. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a five furlongs handicap race for two-year-olds only which have been rated from 0 to 65 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60
This race is a seven furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking
This race is a seven furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50 Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is
This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse
3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
