A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME.

THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

Todays feature race will be the Gaynor Winyard Trophy Handicap (Class 4) with nine runners going to post Leading days course trainer/jockey combination Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan team up once more here with the former course o and distance winner Yaaser The five-year-old gelding has been a regular visitor here of late, most recently clutching nce vis the win in a lower grade Handicap here last month and he looks like a leading contender here as well His main rival n here leadi could be Manigordo. Tim Easterby’s six-year-old won this contest last year and really seems to love this course and ould distance. When looking at jockeys today, it’s tough to look past ENNAN PAUL MULRENN The leading course jockey this term, he and distance winner Yaaser looks to be the pick of the has rides across all six of today’s races. The former course winn ancaise at 2.20, Good Point at 2.50, Tafsir at 3.20, Monhammer bunch in the 3.50 His other rides include A La Francaise at 4.20 and Cosa Sara at 4.53 NIEL TUDHOPE DANIEL TUD and JASON HART e both been in outstanding form in the have b last month, notching up 19% and 18% win rates respectively. Tudhope is booked to ride Tendentious at 2.20, i Cover Point at 2.50, Glasses Up at 3.20 and Tuscan at 3.50 while Jason Hart will have a full book of six rides today. nd

TRAINERS TO WATCH

Jim Goldie will be looking to extend his lead atop the Edinburgh Gin Championships, and he has five rides across four races today His most likely contenders look to be Tafsir at 3.20 and Yaaser at 3.50 His other runners being A La Francaise at 2.20, Alpine Sierra at 3.50 and Cosa Sara at 4.53 Another trainer worthing noting here is Daragh Bourke The Waterbeck based trainer is the most in-form trainer of the last month with an impressive 33% strike rate (two wins from six) He runs Non Mollare in the 4.53 and the six-year-old looks to have a good chance He finished a respectable second behind the in-form Urban Road at Newcastle last time out and with Jason Hart getting the ride, he should do well.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

2:20 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY CUVEE LOUISE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

2:50 THE BRITISH EBF RUBY ANNIVERSARY NOVICE STAKES

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds which are EBF eligible but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

3:20 THE STOBO CASTLE LADIES DAY GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60

3:50 THE GAYNOR WINYARD TROPHY HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

4:20 THE MADELEINE CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

4:53 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY ROSE MAGNUM HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 60 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
