A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME.
THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
Tonight's feature race is one for the stayers, over a trip of just shy of two miles. Billy Loughnane rides the red-hot night's one the two mile Robert Johnson who has won three of his last four starts but is now 6lb higher for his success at Thirsk t last time out. He has yet to prove he stays this far though which could also prove a negative for Belle Of stays this cou Annandale and Baez who are yet to go over this far. The eight year-old Idilico makes appeal after a good second ndale Id over course and distance last time and despite not being seen on the Flat for over a season, Exelcius could prove ver to be on a handy mark Yorkindess will have to defy top-weight and struggled off a mark off 70 last time out st hile Wontgetfooledagan and Red Missile will need to improve. but should appreciate the return to the turf, while a
the top claimers in Great Britain and is 2-8 at BILLY LOUGHNANE has quickly established himself as one of ting with Star Sight (7.00) when riding for Rebecca Musselburgh. Billy has three rides on the evening, starting Sig (7.30) His night concludes with Flylikeaneagle in the lucky last Menzies, shortly followed by Robert Johnson w
o see him ride at least one on the evening. Paul Mulrennan is often a strong and it would be no surprise to on evening candidate here and has a full book of rides this evening. He rides Primo's Commet (8.00) who has fell nicely in the weights and top weight Rory who should appreciate the drop back to seven furlongs. ho dro
REBECCA MENZIES is now 0-19 over the last 14 days but do not let that put you off her runners this evening. She has Star Start (7.00) who should take all the beating after a solid victory last time out. She also saddles Loubiere (6.30) who should step forward from her debut and One Of Our Own for the same connections. CHARLIE JOHNSTON has continued to follow in the footsteps of his father and seems to find vast success at Musselburgh and Alpen Power could prove a worthy newcomer in the opener. His only other runner on the card is Yorkindness in the feature race, which could boost her chances.
This race is a seven furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the Flat, this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse
3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

PLAY SMARTER
This looks to concern the last-time-out winners ECCLESIASTICAL and Cinque Verde, with preference for the former as he’s still very well treated on the best of his form. He can bring up the hat-trick at the expense of Karl Burke’s filly, who was rejuvenated by first-time blinkers when opening her account last time and would be a serious danger if that headgear has a similar effect. Primo’s Comet looks best of the rest.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
