A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME.
THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
The weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap Stakes is today's feature race, a five furlong dash for horses rated 0-80 e Six runners head down to post, with three rivals already proving themselves over this course and distance Top- ners themselve weight Havagomecca ended off last season with a neck success around here and should strip much fitter for his run avagomecca last month. Modular Magic has been kept fit on the all-weather but is now 3lb higher than when a disappointing favourite at Newcastle in January. He may need the run, while Primo's Comet bids to land his fourth course and avourite need C distance success, albeit runs from out of the handicap today Riversway makes a lot of appeal after ending last e field is concluded by Mr Beaufort and Lady Lade season in great style and must be feared and the B
CONNOR BEASLEY st 14 days, so he is an obvious choice to follow today. has been operating at a 15% strike rate over the past ellent second last time out, along with two other solid chances He maintains the ride on Daley T in the opener, who was an excellent en firing like he usually does but he rarely comes here without a solid book throughout the day PAUL MULRENNAN hasn't been h ferent He has a ride in each race, and it would be a surprise to see him not come away with a of rides and today looks no different. s winner GRAHAM LEE rides the hat-trick seeking Code Purple in the 3R Solutions Handicap Stakes which should have a great H chance, along with Carlos Felix in the Central Taxis Handicap Stakes, who was narrowly beaten last time out. tral w
STELLA BARCLAY has enjoyed a fine couple of weeks, having had three winners at a 23% strike rate. She has two chances to add to that here with Rumnotred and Bazalgette who run in the 2.15pm and 5.00pm, respectively. IAIN JARDINE often boasts a strong hand here and saddles four runners throughout the seven races. Smart Lass has a good record on the Flat and has won at Musselburgh six times under both codes. It is interesting that JULIE CAMACHO sends just one here today, hinting that Riversway could have a major chance in today's feature
1:40 THE BET AT RACINGTV.COM RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES (FOR HORSES IN BANDS C AND D) (GBB RACE)
This five furlongs contest is for horses aged 3-5 years is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
2:15 THE 3R SOLUTIONS HANDICAP STAKES
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
2:45 THE WEATHERBYS GLOBAL STALLIONS APP HANDICAP STAKES
This is a two mils handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60
3:20 THE WEATHERBYSSHOP.CO.UK HANDICAP STAKES
This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
3:50 THE CENTRAL TAXIS RACE DAY HANDICAP STAKES
This is a one mile and four and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the Flat, this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
4:25
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 65 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60
5:00 THE RACECOURSE LIVE STREAMS ON RACING TV EXTRA HANDICAP STAKES
This one mile handicap race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 46 and 55 However, horses officially rated in excess of 55 are also eligible to take part The conditions of this race stipulate that the maximum weight to be carried by a horse rated 55 would be 9st 9lb, so should a horse rated 57 be entered to run, they would be asked to carry 2lb more than the top weight – 9st 11lb

PLAY SMARTER
CODE PURPLE looks the way to go on the back of his cosy Redcar success and can defy a 2lb rise in the weights to complete a quick hat-trick. Gunnerside suffered a poor run when sixth at Southwell last time so should ensure Ben Haslam’s C&D scorer doesn’t get things all his own way though. The returning The Gay Blade appeals as the pick of the remainder for place purposes
Weatherbys sponsor two of this afternoon’s seven races, starting with the Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap, a class 5 event over a trip just shy of 2m.
The weights are headed by the 72-rated Thermoscope, who represents the Keith Dalgleish stable Unsuccessful in five starts in Ireland when trained by Sheila Lavery, the Galileo five-year-old won his sole start for Brian Ellison, at Newcastle in October. He stayed on well to win over a similar trip and was sold shortly after for 40,000gns and should have more to offer for his new connections.
His former trainer Ellison is represented by Kiss My Face, who won a handicap hurdle at Catterick in February, before completing a quickfire all-weather hat-trick in the space of 21 days Last of five at Chelmsford last month, this is his first start on the turf in a while (under this code), but he handles good-to-soft well over hurdles so should cope with conditions.
Idilico is another who has been hurdling, whilst Zephlyn has just under 2 lengths to find with Kiss My Face on their meeting at Newcastle in mid-March. Ewan Whillans’ four-year-old remains a maiden after six starts, but he has a nice pull at the weights with the Ellison-trained runner
The field is made up of Grand Canal, who struggled at Bath on his recent reappearance and should appreciate this better ground, and Aegis Power, who is another maiden. Stepping up in trip could unlock some improvement in the Nathaniel gelding, who is making his first start for Tim Easterby, having moved from Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere stable.
Half-a-dozen also go to post for the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap, a 0-80 class 4 staged over the minimum trip
Three of the runners are previous course-and-distance winners and these include Primo’s Comet who won the race in 2021 and finished fourth in last year’s renewal. The victory two years ago came off a mark of 65 and his latest success – also over this same course-and-distance – came off 72, so he is now 10lbs lower. All six of his turf victories were gained over 5f here at Musselburgh.
Top-weight Havagomecca won here in October last year and might have needed her reappearance run last month, whilst Modular Magic is the other runner who has been successful over today’s course-and-distance in the past. That win came in July 2021 and although he hasn’t won a race since, races off the same mark of 75
The other trio are four-year-olds and likely to be open to more improvement. Lady Lade finished runner-up to Havagomecca last October and also looked in need of the outing when returning to action in the same race last month.
Mr Beaufort and Riversway are the least-exposed runners in the field and the former won twice for Tom Clover as a three-year-old. He has dropped to just 2lbs above that latest winning mark and this is just his third run for David O’Meara and Middleham Park.
Julie Camacho’s Riversway won three times between July and September last year and the Mayson filly begins the season 5lb higher than when last seen. She seems tactically versatile and remains full of potential.

THERMOSCOPE made an immediate impact for Brian Ellison when going in at Newcastle and this lightlyraced 5-y-o can make a winning debut for Keith Dalgleish now with very few miles still on the clock. Aegis Power is still a maiden but weighted to go well on his seasonal return and next on the list ahead of in-form Kiss My Face

PRIMO’S COMET boasts a very good record here and, having performed with credit in a more competitive C&D handicap than this last month, he makes plenty of appeal off the same mark. If able to pick up where she left off last season, Riversway will be a big threat, while both Lady Lade and Mr Beaufort are capable of taking a hand in the finish.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action
1 723 e cours edical e Me ys t rd b y vironment, make u erected
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
