The day ends with the Class 3 Sky Bet Sunday Series Sprint Handicap at 6.45pm Trainer Craig Lidster has been in p excellent form recently and he runs Resilience in this, hoping to add to his 33% strike rate for the past two weeks. TRAINERS TO WATCH

KARL BURKE has enjoyed a fine couple of weeks, having had six winners at a 25% strike rate. He has three chances to add to that here with Lochaber, Ana Gold and Liamarty Dreams running in the 4.15, 4.45 and 6.15 respectively. WILLIAM HAGGAS is another to have had a successful past two weeks, operating at a 30% strike rate. He has just the one runner here and that comes in the form of Mystic Pearl, running in the 4.45 with Ben Curtis booked to ride

3:45 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES 3YO SPRINT APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 85 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners ’ carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. To be ridden by Apprentice Jockeys.

4:15 THE RACE TO A CURE FOR MND EBF NOVICE STAKES

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

4:45 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES FILLIES' HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70

5:15 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES MIDDLE DISTANCE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

5:45 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES 3YO MILE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 0 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.

The bus to Wallyford Train Station will depart from the racecourse side (north) of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill The bus to Wallyford will depart at 18:25 & 19:25 to coincide with departures to Edinburgh at 18:42 & 19:47 and departures to North Berwick at 18:47 & 19:47.

NEWCRAIGHALL TRAIN STATION RETURNS

The bus to Newcraighall Train Station will depart from the racecourse side (north) of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill. at 18:25 & 19:25 to coincide with departures to Tweedbank at 19:23 & 20:23.
