This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners ’ carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Our next race is a seven-furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90

3:00 THE TOTE WORLD POOL SCOTTISH SPRINT CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This race is a five-furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

3:35 THE TOTE SUMMER WORLD POOL QUEEN’S CUP (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

The feature race of the day on our return back to the flat is a one mile six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards, which always turns out to be a fabulous race As this is a heritage handicap, it will attract some high class horses but just like the last race, they concede plenty of weight to the lower rated rivals.

4:10 THE TOTE FANTASY WHO’S IN YOUR STABLE EBF NOVICE STAKES (GBB RACE)

This five-furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

4:45 THE INA & ELLA MACGREGOR MEMORIAL HANDICAP STAKES

The penultimate race this afternoon is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

5:20 THE TOTE CONGRATULATES MR & MRS WHITTLE HANDICAP STAKES (DIV 1)

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70

To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions

Georgie came all the way from Wales so she’s a genuine 'Welsh Pembrokeshire’ corgi. A very affectionate and loving dog, who kind of ‘smothers’ you rather than cuddles. Definitely a mischievous dog, always up to something she shouldn’t be, don’t let her cheeky smile fool you!

Georgie” (Burnanne Little Miss Sunshine) is a 7 month old Pembroke Corgi. She is a very quiet loving wee dog who gets her speed from her dad who is like a whippet! She has the Corgi “zoomies” every night usually as we try to watch TV! She also has a love for socks and steals them at every given opportunity, even if you are wearing them!

Graham is a 2 year old Pembroke Welsh corgi male, originally born in Washington state in the USA. His mom and dad moved to Edinburgh in 2021 and brought him along with us! Graham's favorite activity is barking, as I'm sure will be fully apparent during the race!

HARRI

Harri” (Harri Shoei) is a Pembroke Corgi & is Nellies dad, he is 8 years old, very friendly and greets you each morning with his trademark “Hellooooooo!” Like most Corgis he loves to roll in anything smelly! He is also a “Houdini” and can get out of a dog crate in 11 seconds! Hes not the fastest dog unless you are trying to catch him for rolling in the aforementioned smelly stuff.

Lottie gets called Naughty Lottie as she is trouble with a capital T. She is nearly 2 years old and she loves playing with her toys and chasing birds. She doesn't like the water!

Originally part of our Jubilee Celebrations for Her Late Majesty The Queen, we felt it fitting to move our famous Corgi Derby to our Easter Saturday Raceday, where we feature the Queen's Cup - a £100,000 highly competitive flat race with royal approval from Her Late Majesty The Queen.

NELLIE

Nellie” (Burnanne Wee Nessie) is 5 year old Pembroke Corgi. She LOVES hearing herself talk and barks just for fun! She is the best mum we have had (she is mum to Georgie) and just loves when she has puppies to look after, even if they aren’t hers. She may be small but she is mighty!

OLIVER

Oliver is 2 years old. He is actually a show dog and has won many prizes. He loves running in the woods and is quite happy to chase deer, which of course he never catches. He is a very sociable boy who loves meeting people and spends most evenings on his Mum's knee.

Paddy is 9 years old. What better way to announce Paddy's retirement than to take part in a world famous Corgi Derby. At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.

The nearest train station to Musselburgh Racecourse is Wallyford on the Edinburgh Waverley to North Berwick train line On racedays we organise a courtesy bus from Wallyford and Newcraighall train stations to the Racecourse, returning after racing.

WALLYFORD STATION RETURNS

The bus to Wallyford Train Station will depart from the racecourse side (north) of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill The double decker bus to Wallyford will run continously between 5.30pm and 7.30pm to coincide with departures to Edinburgh and North Berwick

NEWCRAIGHALL TRAIN STATION RETURNS

The bus to Newcraighall Train Station will depart from the racecourse side (north) of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill at 18:15 and 19.15 to coincide with departures to Tweedbank at 18:53 and 19:54.

ScotRail trains may be subject to short notice alterations on Saturday 8th April. Please check before you start your journey as alterations will be made on the day.
