SANDY THOMSON is having one of his best seasons as a trainer, currently with a 21% strike rate and has more winners than he did last term He sends two runners to the track today, Theirshegoes in the first and Faithful Flyer in the penultimate. Theirshegoes has the second run of her career, where she could well have come on from finishing fourth last time out. DONALD MCCAIN is also having an incredible season and runs Bents Hallow and Heroes De Moutiers The latter is a Points winner over further distance and didn’t disgrace himself last time out. The market speaks in his favour and he will be disappointed not to bag a winner on today’s card
1:50 THE RACING TV COSMIC CASE MARES’ NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (NOVICES’ CHAMPIONSHIP HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile novices’ hurdle race is for fillies and mares aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.
2:20 THE GEORGE CRAWFORD LEGACY TRUST NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE
This three mile steeple chase is another for novices’ It is restricted to horses aged five-years-old and upwards, which have not previously won more than two steeple chases, and are rated between 0-100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
2:50 THE LEAPING DEERE NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
This is the third novice event on today’s card and is another handicap for horses aged four-year-olds and upwards Over the two miles and four furlongs trip, horses to have won after February 11th will have to carry a 7lb penalty for each success after this date The standard handicap rules will still apply.
This is another three miles steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125.
Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.
This two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
