HARRY DERHAM is enjoying a fine strike rate in his first season as a trainer since he left PAUL NICHOLLS last year He’s saddled four winners from fifteen runners this year, giving him an impressive 27% strike rate. He sends two runners to the track today, Shared in our first and Fidelio Vallis in the second. The latter had been running well for PAUL NICHOLLS but hasn’t been seen for 410 days He’s since moved to HARRY and is now rated 139, which is only 2lb higher than when he bought up a three-timer in the spring of 2021 If primed he could go well and it will be interesting to see if the market speaks in his favour

1:22 THE BET365 SCOTTISH TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE (A JUVENILE HURDLE) (LISTED RACE) (GBB RACE)

Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. This race is a juvenile trial and is for horses aged four only In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two miles hurdle race will now have an official rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things Initially, each horse is allocated 11st with fillies then receiving a 7lb allowance, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at a certain level. These penalties range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap hurdle race, to 5lb for a Class 1 weight-forage hurdle victory.

1:55 THE BET365 SCOTTISH CHAMPION HANDICAP CHASE (FOR THE BOWES-LYON TROPHY)

This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2:25 THE BET365 SCOTTISH SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GBB RACE)

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two miles novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

2:55 THE PERTEMPS NETWORK GROUP HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (PERTEMPS HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)

The fourth race this afternoon is a three miles handicap hurdle race for five-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-145. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card, the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 140 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

3:25 THE BET365 NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE

This is a two mile four furlong handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

3:55 THE BET365 HANDICAP CHASE (GO NORTH RED RUM SERIES QUALIFIER)

This is a three miles handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

4:25 THE BET365 HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being unpenalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case

2018 winner We Have A Dream won a Grade 1 at Aintree same year. Carlito Brigante, 4th in 2010, won the 2011 Coral Cup.

Tommy’s Oscar, runner-up in 2021, has won six times since, including in Grade 2 company, 4th placed Third Time Lucki has since become a Grade 2 winner over fences & 6th Belfast Banter won the 2021 County Hurdle at Cheltenham, followed by a Grade 1 at Aintree. 2015 winner Some Plan won the Grade 1 Irish Arkle two years later.

Won in 2020 by Greanateen who won both the Grade 1 bet365 Celebration Chase and Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase in 2021. Also won in 2017 by San Benedeto before landing a Grade 1 at Aintree in the same year.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.

SUNDAY 5TH FEBRUARY

The nearest train station to Musselburgh Racecourse is Wallyford on the Edinburgh Waverley to North Berwick train line On racedays we organise a courtesy bus from Wallyford and Newcraighall train stations to the Racecourse, returning after racing.

WALLYFORD STATION RETURNS

The bus to Wallyford Train Station will depart from the racecourse side (north) of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill at 16:20 & 17:20 to coincide with departures to Edinburgh at 16:41 & 17:44 and departures to North Berwick at 16:47 & 17:49.

NEWCRAIGHALL TRAIN STATION RETURNS

Newcraighall Train Station Returns - bus will depart from the south side of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill. The buses to Newcraighall will depart at 16:20 & 17:20 to coincide with departures to Tweedbank at 17:23 & 18:24.

ScotRail trains may be subject to short notice alterations on Sunday 5th February. Please check before you start your journey as alterations will be made on the day.
