A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.
One of the highlights of our racing calendar, the bet365 Scottish Cheltenham Trials Day contains many high class races which e D should come down to the wire The bet365 Edinburgh National Handicap Chase has a whopping £50,000 of prize money on ha offer and it looks a ultra-competitive renewal We have two past winners of the race Captain Cattistock (2022) and Mighty renewal. r Thunder (2021) who bid to make it two wins over this mammoth trip. Midlands Grand National winner Truckers Lodge could der (2021) G give Paul Nicholls a chance but is high in the weights, along with the hat-trick seeking Slipaway who will need to defy top- ive s weight The Ian Williams-trained Tide Times scored last time out over shorter and could still be well-handicapped over this a onal winner Flower of Scotland and bottom weight Just Don’t Know longer trip Others of note include recent Kelso National Scotla
Many of the jockeys will be thankful to pick up any rides today but BRYONY FROS Limited Handicap Chase and the favourite Outlaw Peter in the She gets the leg up on Halo Des Obeaux in the Frodon Novices’ Cha s a full book of rides, and it will be hard to not see his not in the Winners’ Stayers’ Hurdle As usual, BRIAN HUGHES almost has b still leads the way in the Musselburgh Championship and Notlongtillmay looks one to follow in the Enclosure over the weekend. He an opener Nayati also looks to have leading claims in the County Hurdle, with Issisfree of interest in the National. Despite not having his i handy 7lb claim in the Stayers’ on Rexem, BEN HARVEY still looks to have three solid rides and can add another win to his tally here. N still so
FROST looks to have two brilliant rides for Paul Nicholls.
It’s not very often you will see many PAUL NICHOLLS entries here, but he looks to have a strong force in the attempt to take over Scotland. He enjoyed an incredible day at the Cheltenham Trials Day last a week ago, landing three of the nine races, and will be hoping to clean up here too. DR RICHARD NEWLAND saddles just two runners but they look to both have great chances and are worth a second look Current leading trainer in the Musselburgh Championship, DONALD MCCAIN, is feared despite any standout chances. However, he rarely goes without a winner here and will want his extend his lead to retain the championship once again.
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two miles, about four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases
This is a four mile handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145.
This three miles hurdle race is another for novices’ It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than three hurdle races. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex with fillies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous hurdle race winners are allocated a penalty dependent on the class of race which they have won.
This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
The penultimate race today is a two miles handicap hurdle race which has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage
Our last race, as the race title suggests, is a Veterans’ steeple chase which is designed specifically for the older horses of the National Hunt scene In order to qualify for this two miles, about six furlongs handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be officially rated between 0 and 130. These types of races often attract some big-race winners from the past who are still enjoying their sport and have no intention of entering retirement just yet!

TIMEFORM VIEW Had a fine season as a novice hurdler in 2020/21, winning his first 3 starts Shaped better than the bare result after 20 months off when third on chase debut at Carlisle and, with his subsequent Uttoxeter effort best overlooked (race came too soon), he remains with potential in this sphere STEWARDS NOTE: Following its run on 20/11/2022 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run. TIMEFORM VIEW Things didn’t go to plan for this French recruit last season but he got his career back on track when landing a Sandown handicap hurdle in November Good effort at second attempt over fences when runner-up at Newbury (22.4f, soft) last time and likely to play a part in the finish.

TIMEFORM VIEW Opened chase account back from a break at Sedgefield in October before following over hurdles here the following month. TIMEFORM VIEW Looked rather fortuitous (left clear at the last) when getting off the mark over fences in a 4-runner handicap over 2m here in December However, put in his place behind Notlongtillmay over C&D next time and he’s 7lb ‘wrong’ at the weights. Star Ratingëêêêê Official BHA Rating 112

PLAY SMARTER
NOTLONGTILLMAY proved that this trip is well within his range when scoring in good style over C&D last month and, with the promise of better to come from this 7-y-o, he is taken to make it 3-3 over fences He certainly won’t have things all his own way, with Drumbear feared greatly on the back of his chase debut success at Limerick, while both Halo Des Obeaux and Bear Ghylls are probably capable of better than they have so far shown in this sphere

This marathon trip could be just the ticket for DOYEN BREED, who held his own in decent company as a novice last season and he should be all the better following his pipe-opener over hurdles at Doncaster The 8-y-o has edged down to an attractive mark, too, and gets the nod in an open-looking contest. Slipway is still progressing judged on his latest success at Fontwell and he looks a big threat. Truckers Lodge and Flower of Scotland are others with appealing claims
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares
It also protects horse welfare through a nationwide ‘safety net’ that is available to assist any former racehorse considered ‘vulnerable’. In such cases, the charity provides funding for the provision of expert care prior to suitable rehoming.
We are delighted to be partnering with Musselburgh Racecourse in a bid to increase awareness as well as registration of former racehorses in Scotland, by registering and increasing numbers we can then continue to work to deliver opportunities for you, regardless of your choice of path for your former horse, be it Eventing, Show Jumping, Hunting, Polo, HorseBall, Dressage, Endurance, fun rides or the Common Ridings. We want you to be registered, there really is something for everyone!
We would like to encourage all to register, whether your horse was only in training and never made it to the track, ran once or won the Grand National or Ebor.
We have some fun competitions for you today as well as an incentive to register, please come and see us at our RoR Gazebo situated in on the Pommery Lawn.

BETTING FORECAST: 1-3 Galopin Des Champs, 4-1 Stattler, 12-1 Kemboy, 20-1 Fury Road, 25-1 Any Second Now, 33-1The Big Dog, Franco De Port.
Already a short-priced favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, anything other than a win for GALOPIN DES CHAMPS will come as a surprise By far the highest rated runner in the line-up, he easily beat Fakir D’oudairies into second in the John Durkan at Punchestown, with that one since giving the form a boost by scoring on his next start at Thurles The selection was an easy winner on his only previous try over three miles and it’s difficult to find any chinks in his armour. The only slight concern is the recent record of favourites in this Grade 1 contest, with Quel Espirit the last market leader to triumph back in 2012. Stattler rates as the biggest danger to Galopin Des Champs. He had a flawless campaign last season and went down narrowly on his return to action at Tramore on New Year’s Day. Likely to come on plenty for that effort, he should give a good account of himself Kemboy, Fury Road and Franco De Port finished second, third and fourth in the Savills over the course and distance in December, but they all have an even tougher challenge now. Twice placed in the Aintree National, it’ll be interesting to see how Any Second Now fares, while Munster National andTroytown Chase winnerThe Big Dog completes the seven strong field.

PLAY SMARTER
With his yard in better form, MR MULDOON bounced back with a bang off his much-reduced mark at Chepstow last month and remains potentially well treated back over fences Didero Vallis was placed in last season’s Kim Muir and wasn’t beaten far in a better race that this at Ludlow last month, so rates a huge threat. Irish-raider Nick Lost shouldn’t be taken lightly, either

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
