Our feature race today is the Fitzdares Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, a class 3 handicap which has a decent amount r 3 of prize money on offer for connections A field of 5 head down to post, with the hat-trick seeking Notlongtillmay leading connections. 5 the way in the betting with the hood applied once again from the Linda Morgan stable Parliament Hill was a classy winner s on heavy ground at Wetherby last time out, over the minimum distance, and has leading claims here again under Sean avy Bowen, albeit stepping back up in distance The McCain/Hughes partnership can never be discounted and they team up owen, with Barrichello who will have to give weight to all his rivals Diamond State and Fete Champion both have a bit to prove a r in a competitive a on rating but neither of these are discounted either affair

TRAINERS TO WATCH

DONALD McCAIN has already had the six winners at Musselburgh this season and can kick on again here He sends just four stablemates here with Barrichello and Creative Control looking his best chances of success, but the other two can’t be discounted either. It is interesting to see Olly Murphy send two runners over and he must expect both of his in-mates to have leading claims Parliment Hill should go well in the feature race, along with the point-to-point winner Act Of Authority who attempts to land the bumper REBECCA MENZIES has four winners from her last 18 runners and she could be one to watch today with last time out winner Russian Virtue having solid claims at success.

12:15 THE FITZDARES CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

Our first race is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is specifically for Conditonal Jockeys, who’s weight is determined by winners rode

12:45 THE FITZDARES MAIDEN HURDLE RACE (GBB RACE)

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this three miles race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today

1:15 THE FITZDARES NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE)

This is a two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. 1:45 THE FITZDARES HANDICAP CHASE

This is a three miles steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2:15 THE FITZDARES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GO NORTH SEA PIGEON SERIES QUALIFIER)

This is a two miles handicap hurdle race four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

2:45 THE FITZDARES NEW YEAR HANDICAP CHASE

The penultimate race is a two miles steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

3:15 THE FITZDARES OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GO NORTH JODAMI SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)

The final racew on the dat, as the title suggests, is a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile and seven and a half furlongs

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.

ATM Cash Machines are located adjacent to the Bistro Bar Glass Door & Main Tote Windows. Only £20 notes and multiples thereof are dispensed. There is a £2 transaction fee charged.

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.

NEWCRAIGHALL TRAIN STATION RETURNS

Collections will be made at 10:45 & 11:45 to coincide with arrivals from Tweedbank. Newcraighall Train Station Returns - bus will depart from the south side of Linkfield Road at the corner of Millhill. The buses to Newcraighall will depart at 15:30 & 16:30 to coincide with departures to Tweedbank at 16:27 & 17:25.
