T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA

Our feature race today is the Fitzdares ‘Auld Reekie’ Handicap Chase and it looks a belter run over the two mile, four and a half furlong looks ru trip Top-weight Minella Drama will have to concede weight to all his other eight rivals but looks the class act of the field for the -weight Minella all his rival leading jockey and trainer here at Musselburgh Pay The Piper has been a solid candidate for Ann Hamilton and returns to arguably his key at optimum trip since running over the minimum distance the last twice. There are still question marks over Gol Des Bois stamina so this um last are que could stretch his ability and from the same ownership, Cedar Hill could prove the better off the two here with Derek Fox in the saddle ould bette Half Shot bids for the hat-trick but has gone up another 6lb for his success around here in November, while Baron De Midleton has also ned over at a short price and both will need a career best. gone up for 1lb for his second at Sedgefield but was turned a b

TRAINERS TO WATCH

hances of extending his lead in the Musselburgh

DONALD McCAIN usually brings a strong hand to Musselburgh and makes it his playground and today should be no exception He saddles two in the last which could prove his best chance at success on the day, but he has numerous chances throughout the card. SANDY THOMSON saddles Benson in the closer and he has hit the frame the last three times and will be hoping to go one better today Cedar Hill also looks a strong candidate in the feature chase, and it could prove a good day for Sandy. Stuart Coltherd brings just a sole representative here in Cooper’s Cross and that should mean he has an excellent chance in the feature chase also

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

12:25

THE FITZDARES FIRST FOOT JUVENILE HURDLE RACE

(GO NORTH GREY BOMBER SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)

Juvenile races are designed solely for three/four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals Initially, every runner in this one mile and seven and a half furlongs hurdle race is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 7lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 7lb for any hurdle race or 12lb if they have won two.

1:00

THE FITZDARES HAPPY NEW YEAR HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GO

NORTH

BRINDISI BREEZE SERIES QUALIFIER)

The second race on the card is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

1:35

THE FITZDARES ‘AULD REEKIE’ HANDICAP CHASE (GBB RACE)

This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

2:10 THE FITZDARES NEW YEARS DAY NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases This race is also a handicap for horses rated from 0-100.

2:45 THE FITZDARES HOGMANEIGH HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GBB RACE)

The penultimate race this afternoon is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-145. As all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 140 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

3:20 THE FITZDARES HAIR OF THE DOG HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

LES PIGGOT AND JIM BRADLEY

The recent sad death at the age of 80 of Les Piggot, one of Scotland’s best sprinters, brings to mind recollections of the great amateur athlete’s connection with ‘pro’ athletics. Younger generations may not realise but the two athletics codes were totally separate until just over 30 years ago. In effect there existed a form of apartheid with only amateurs eligible to represent their country

Apart from multiple successes at Scottish Championships, Les also competed at two Olympics, Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972, two European Championships Helsinki 1971 and Rome 1974 and two Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh 1970 and Christchurch 1974, in a top-level career over some thirteen years. He was Britain’s only 100ms. finalist in both those Commonwealth Games and in 1974 equalled the U.K. All Comers 100ms. record of 10.3s.

As a sprinter of the highest rank, it surprised many and shocked the amateur establishment when he turned to the ‘pros’ to seek improvement. In a sense this was ‘crossing the line’ and potentially endangering his amateur status. And the man he turned to after the Mexico Olympics was sprint coach Jim Bradley whose track record, no pun intended, of producing top sprinters was unparalleled.

A formed pro-Sprinter himself of average ability, Bradley had been a ‘trial horse’ for the iconic Australian Eric Cumming, the 1952 New Year Sprint winner His real name was James Scott, a successful car tyre salesman by day and a near obsessive, perfectionist sprint coach otherwise. His knowledge of the sprint game was second to none and he was also adept at the use of psychology to instil trust in his methods and to improve athletes’ self-confidence.

His CV spoke for itself – five New Year Sprint winners between 1963 and 1971, Ricky Dunbar, Dave Deas, Tommy Dickson, George McNeil and Wilson Young. When Les approached him, he was initially taken back to be told he was ‘only a legs runner ’ and that his running style was ‘poor’ because of his arms which only swayed across his torso. Bradley agreeing to assist him was subject to two conditions, firstly that Les would not turn ‘pro’ as he wanted to demonstrate his methods could also work for amateurs, and secondly Les would not run at all for 4 months, to enable him to forget his poor technique Instead, he would build up his shoulder gridle strength working on the boxer’s speedball and do exercise circuits using bodyweight resistance only. He assured Les if he subscribed to his methods, he would improve him by about 3 yards.

Once on the track, Les adapted his style to use his arms effectively during high quality intense training sessions that lasted no more than 25 minutes with sprints up to a maximum 120 yards. Sessions took place at Saughton where among others he trained with George McNeill, Stuart Hogg, Dave Deas and Bert Hutchison. By the time Bradley emigrated to Australia in the early 1970’s Les’ predicted improvement had materialised, thanks to the coach and his own input. Needless to say, this rankled with a few high-profile amateurs who called for Les to be banned. That did not happen, but he was interviewed before the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games by a senior figure and pointedly reminded of the requirements of amateur status Thankfully, those attitudes are now in the past.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
