DONALD McCAIN saddles four favourites on the day and he has been in flying form with the champion jockey all season However, Collingham looks his best chance on the day, ridden by Theo Gillard in the opener LUCINDA RUSSELL often brings a strong-hand to Musselburgh and her runners could cause a few upsets on the card. RACE DESCRIPTIONS
12:10 THE WATCH ON RACING TV CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
Today’s opener is a two miles, three furlongs and 171 yards handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. This race is additionally open to horses rated 121 and 122. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ usually a distinct disadvantage.
12:40 THE RACING TV NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE
Today’s second race on the card is a Novice race Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular one mile, seven furlongs 124 yard novices’ hurdle race is for for novice four yrs old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.
1:10 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV “INTRODUCTORY” JUVENILE HURDLE RACE
An Introductory Hurdle is a race which is restricted to horses which have not previously run in more than one hurdle race This particular two mile contest is reserved for juvenile three-year-olds The weights are initially set at 10st 12lb for each runner with fillies and mares receiving a 7lb allowance from their male rivals However, any runner that was successful on their first start will be allocated with a 5lb penalty
1:40 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE
This is a one mile, seven furlongs and 182 yards handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb. Just like the second race on the card, this race is for novice horses only.
2:10 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
This is a one mile, seven furlongs and 124 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.
2:40 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
This penultimate race is a two miles, seven furlongs and 180 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
3:10 THE BET AT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP CHASE
The final race of the day is a two miles, seven furlongs and 170 yards handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. This race is also open to horses rated 111 and 112. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH
At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
