T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA

Our feature race today is the Saltire Festival Handicap Chase. Run over the minimum trip, five go to post in what promises to be a competitive event 2019 winning trainer Lucinda Russell sends DIAMOND STATE to try and win the race once more with mpetitive DIAMOND STAT regular rider Derek Fox taking the ride The six-year-old registered two wins last season and another three placed efforts, der he rounded off the season with a fourth placed effort at Perth. His seasonal reappearance was a good effort behind Minella unded His reap Plus at Hexham, from which he should have gained some race fitness CENOTICE was dropped 2lb by the handicapper after us fitness. CENOTIC a finishing 47 lengths behind Black Gerry, he looks to be lurking on a dangerous mark so could be a big player in the race u s been given the assistance of Brian Hughes by trainer Ross O’Sullivan Top weight BENEFIT RUN is a real veteran and has B

H TO WATCH

ssini Man in the 12:50 for Sandy Thomson, who is RYAN MANIA finds himself with three rides today. The first is Massini on debut at the track back at the start of November. He having his second start for the stable after recording a win tra hoping to add to his Musselburgh victory on Massini Man It’s rare also rides Kilbrainy and Faithfulflyer and will be Musselbu p jockey BRIAN HUGHES riding and today is no different He takes six rides, and it will we get a meeting without top d come as a surprise if he hasn’t added a win or two to his current total come the end of the day The Blame Game m has found himself on a very workable mark and could get back into the winners’ enclosure under Brian Hughes. e w

TRAINERS TO WATCH

NICKY RICHARDS can seem to do no wrong at the moment and currently has a 36.4% strike rate at the track and has three more good chances that could well add to his total. Aubis Walk is having her second start for the stable after a good effort on her first start for the yard, she should take a lot of beating in the 1:25. DONALD MCCAIN is no stranger to the track and has three runners declared to today’s racing Cenotice has to be respected from a reduced mark in our feature while Chti Balko gets the assistance of 5lb claimer Abbie McCain to try and get him back into the winners’ enclosure

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

12:50 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP CHASE

Our first race on the card today is a two miles and four furlongs, 68 yard handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

1:25 THE SUSAN SMITH JUST-GIVING MAGGIES MARES’ NOVICES’ HURDLE

Today’s second race on the card is a Novice race Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular one mile, seven furlongs 124 yard novices’ hurdle race is for for novice four yrs old and upwards fillies and mares only, which have not won more than three hurdle races.

1:57 THE SPONSOR THE SALTIRE FOR A DAY HANDICAP HURDLE

This is a two miles, three furlongs, 171 yard handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

2:30 THE SALTIRE FESTIVAL HANDICAP CHASE

This one mile, seven furlongs, 182 yard handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ usually a distinct disadvantage.

3:05 THE ATHELSTANEFORD BIRTHPLACE OF THE SALTIRE HANDICAP HURDLE

The penultimate race this afternoon is a one mile, seven furlongs, 124 yard handicap hurdle race for three-year olds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-115. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

3:35 THE SALTIRE.SCOT HANDICAP HURDLE

The final race this afternoon is a two mile, seven furlong, 180 yard handicap hurdle for three-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As in all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
