A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.
Our feature race of today is the penultimate race on the card. The Prince Philip Perpetual Challenge Trophy rHandicap card Chase is run over the marathon trip of three miles and seven and half furlongs. A case can be made for quite a few sof furlongs these but it is especially hard to ignore Flying Verse with the champion jockey Brian Hughes doing the steering, trained itby hard Verse Br Nicky Richards. Rapid Raider has the first time cheekpieces applied but was soundly beaten last time out. However, he Rihas chards. sou won around this track along with the Syd Hosie-trained Coup De Pinceau. Lucinda Russell also saddles Stylish Moment, while Wake Up Early scored by 16 lengths at Market Rasen and although raised 10lb, could still be on a competitive semark. ed to show a little more than his 3 displays shown so far this Thseason e field is the concluded by Nick Lost who will need show tha

He rides Rickety Gate in the opener for Nicky Richards and will have to put on a show to win from out of the llhandicap. f
It is very hard to stray away from NICKY RICHARDS here With 5 wins from the last 14 rides, he could prove worthy to follow again. He sends just two here today, with hopes that Court Dreaming can land him the feature race. JOHN MCCONNELL usually has his fair share of success here and Wild Shot in the lucky last looks his best chance of success across the card As usual, DONALD McCAIN is feared and none of his runners should be discounted.
Our first race on the card is a Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle run over two miles for four-year-old’s and upwards It is open to all those rated between 0-120 but is also open to those rated 121 & 122. For each hurdle race won after the 23rd October 2021 a penalty of 7lb must be carried. The race itself is limited to Conditional Jockeys that are to carry a claim dependant on the number of winners ridden before October 31st, 2021
Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-old maidens in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals Initially, every runner in this two miles hurdle race is allotted 11st 2lb (fillies 10st 10lb) as each horse is a Maiden there are no penalties carried.
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners in this four-year-old and upward race over two miles will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today
This is a two mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb.
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged four-yearsold and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases
The penultimate race this afternoon is a three mile and seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-130. As in all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 120 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.
This two miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 130. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ usually a distinct disadvantage

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
